Trying something new! Still really proud of the book I wrote and want to get that information out there so people can focus on what matters and relax about the rest!

Decided I would post all the info from the book in easily digestible Instagram posts on a new page: . Follow there and share if you think that would be helpful/useful!

Carbon Conscious Christmas - finishing up our work for the LiveNetZero challenge 5 on holiday planning.

Christmas and the holiday season is a great time of year with increased gatherings, gifts, and get-togethers.

While being carbon conscious may not be in the front of our minds, it’s worth thinking about it. Comes down to choices to determine if we’ll be a low, average, or high carbon consumer this year.

I doubt I’ll enjoy the season any less if I focus more on the people and experiences and less on stuff. In fact, I’ll likely enjoy it more!

Being mindful about our choices and the environmental cost is what the LiveNetZero challenge has been all about for our family. I feel better equipped to do that and The Carbon Footprint of Everything by has been/will be a terrific resource!

And check out this article around things to consider this holiday season: https://www.carbonfootprint.com/12_carbons_of_christmas.html

Your carbon footprint follows you when you travel! So what can you do about it??

1. Pack light (and rent larger items, and use less disposables). Fewer things means easier to move, less weight to be carried in planes, trains, automobiles.

2. Choose efficient transport while at your destination. Walk, use public transport, bike. Do you really need that SUV to get around?

3. Eat Local. Be mindful of where your food is from just as you would at home. And take advantage of trying the food that is local to where you are visiting!

4. Conserve water. Put up that Do Not Disturb sign so you aren’t getting new sheets and towels every single day. Guessing you wouldn’t wash them every day at home…

5. Turn down the heat and A/C. Be aware of your room settings so as not to waste energy - just as you would at home.

And you could also look for greener hotels who already consider a lot of these factors for you. Something I’ll start considering!

Which is the best way to go??

Carrying on from .loewen.nair post about driving to NYC, I’ve added some numbers about the carbon cost of various forms of travel.

Transportation is about 1/2 of the environmental cost of travel so worthwhile really considering your options. A family of four travelling together is much better for the environment than flying - and if it’s less than 6 (or even 8) hours, it’s probably not that much longer when you considering airport parking, security, and the hassle.

And I wish I could do train more! Love not having to deal with traffic, parking, and can just nap, read, watch something while on the go. Makes it feel like part of the trip not like a burden to do before it starts.

Bottom line - travel is awesome! But worth thinking about your options of why you go, where you go, how you get there, and how you act/live while there.

And sorry cruisers - but cruising comes up last on the environmentally friendly travel list…

REDUCE, Reuse, Recycle…I think we have to emphasize that first R more

I’m not a hardcore minimalist but I’m definitely not a big fan of stuff in general. And from an environmental (and mental health) aspect, it’s beneficial to:
- reduce the amount of stuff you buy
- reduce how much you drive
- reduce how much electricity you use
- reduce how much meat you eat
- reduce how much waste you produce
- reduce you much time you spend on distractions

And increase how much time and effort you spend on family, friends, and things that truly matter to you
(hopefully the environment is one of those things too!)

I’ve really found Joshua Becker’s material and perspective to be really practical and helpful. It’s just a nice reminder and break to have someone advising you to buy less rather than trying to make you feel like you need to buy this or that product, or just buy more in general. It helps a little to balance it out!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…there’s a reason “Reduce”is the first R!

today! Using technology to help make that happen! Zoom meeting all morning and virtual clinic in the afternoon.

The pandemic has shown us new ways to work (and also to stay home when sick!). It all helps!
