Cultural programs
Community development initiatives

In Ontario, AHACs were first announced in 1995 in response to epidemic, systemic health disparities and inequities within the Aboriginal population across Ontario. They operate from a wholistic Aboriginal health framework which is often referred to by Aboriginal people as “the good life” or as restoring the “good mind”. The framework focuses on the restoration and rebalancing of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal people, families, communities and Nations, and understands “culture as treatment”.

🎨 Call for Indigenous Artists! 🧡
Western University’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives and the Dellece Family Bookstore invite Indigenous artists to submit original artwork for a special design competition!

💰 Prize: $1,000 honorarium
📅 Deadline: August 5 at 4 p.m.
📍 Eligibility: Open to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists who are current students or alumni of Western. Applicants will be subject to the Policy for Affirming Declarations of Indigenous Citizenship or Membership.

🧡 Why this matters:
Proceeds from Orange Shirt and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation merchandise featuring the selected artwork will support the Save the Barn campaign by Chippewas of the Thames First Nation — preserving the last structure of the Mount Elgin Residential School as an interpretive museum.

Proceeds from other merchandise will support the Office of Indigenous Initiatives’ mission and programming.

🎨 Theme:
Artwork should reflect themes of Truth and Reconciliation, land stewardship, food sovereignty, cultural reclamation, and language revitalization.

🖼️ Medium:
Any medium is welcome — including high-resolution photos of beadwork, paintings, or other forms — as long as the design can be adapted for merchandise like t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, etc.

We recently hosted a three-day Indigenous cooking session with Chef Steph Baryluk from British Columbia, as part of the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Project, a collaboration between the Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) and Western University.

The first two days were dedicated to cooking alongside the community, and on the third day, we gathered to share a beautiful community meal. We were thrilled to see such wonderful participation across all three days and to learn how to incorporate Indigenous fusion and cooking techniques into delicious and nourishing meals. Here are some highlights from this inspiring session!

Please keep and eye out for upcoming programs. We will have more exciting workshops in September!
