🙌🏼Muscle shaking during Pilates is something I get asked about a lot.
In most cases, it isn’t a sign of muscle weakness or poor technique.
Instead, it reflects neuromuscular fatigue: meaning the nervous system is working hard to control the movement.
Pilates emphasises slow, controlled contractions and sustained positions. This requires the nervous system to precisely regulate motor unit recruitment, timing, and contraction speed, particularly in deep stabilising muscles. As the nervous system begins to fatigue, these signals become less consistent.
The result is visible shaking, even though the muscle itself may still be capable of producing force.
This response is normal and very common during control-based exercise. It’s also one of the reasons Pilates is so effective , it improves how the nervous system coordinates and controls movement, not just muscle strength. That shaking is part of the process, so don’t worry it usually means the exercise is doing exactly what it’s meant to do.
