Question: What's the ONE thing I can do to completely transform my life?

My answer: ADD VARIETY in what and how you do whatever you are doing/thinking/being. Even if it's just one area of your life, it will help you grow in a way that will positively influence all areas of your life.

IS MY CHRONIC BACK PAIN OR JOINT PAIN HEREDITARY?
(*disclaimer, this post is not designed to replace medical advice, however you should always question information especially if it's telling you that you are doomed for life.*)

While only a trained specialist can determine if a particular pain is hereditary or not, in my experience helping clients manage and overcome chronic pain, chances are most of it is not!

While multiple factors such as diet, exercises, hormone balance, previous illness and even the types of medications we take, can contribute to chronic pain, in my experience a major culprit is the way we move (ie: our movement patterns or lack there of) and the fact that many of our movement patterns are learned behaviors from those we look up to in our environments.

Genetics does play a role in basic movement patterns such as walking, but the way we end up walking later in life, is not necessarily hereditary. However, it can become "hereditary like" when we unconsciously imitate our parents movement patterns. Basic repetitive tasks like taking things out of the washer or the way we get dressed, the way we sit or stand, are learned by observing others.

Ever catch yourself talking to someone who has their arms crossed only to find yourself crossing your own arms? That's a basic example, but just imaging all the people we witness in the day. I once caught myself picking something out of the bathtub the same way I've observed my mom do it (hunched over and not ergonomic at all). I'm pretty sure I even remember the moment my brain registered the movement while observing her lol.

Our brain is constantly scanning our environment and upgrading or downgrading to new movement patterns.

So why do I have a similar back pain as my parent? It's because I genetically adopted their walking pattern then learned through observation how they moved and accomplished tasks. This can also be learned from those you looked up to like your older siblings, teachers, mentors, friends and peers or your favorite celebrities.

So the next time you complain of the same pain that your parents or the people in your environment experience look at their posture and how they move and see if you're possibly mimicking them. The experiment might surprise you lol.

Then, address your pain by learning how to move differently. Or introduce new activities that your parents/mentors would be unlikely to voluntarily practice.

Q: Aren't all yoga's the same?
A: Yes and No. Most of what ppl call yoga are "yoga posture practices". So are we all praxricing postural yoga, yes, but HOW this is practiced varies from style to style. I've narrowed it down to 3 different style-categories:
1- Classical Yoga,
2- Vinyasa/Flow Yoga,
3- Therapeutic Yoga.

My Alignment Yoga classes are a hybrid of all three. (1-Classical style) We move one pose at a time to experience ourselves and different alugnment actions in each pose. Each pose is practiced for about a minute each. (2-Vinyasa-style) Within the same pose we move with the breath, synchronizing each alignment action with either the inhale or the exhale. And (3-Therapeutic style), while my group classes are not designed for those with active injuries, I do believe that, "Good alignment is good therapy." As such I'll often bring therapeutic themes to help those struggling with common aches/pains/misalignments, and share ways that students can use the alignment principles to reduce their risk of injury or unecessary discomfort.

I'd love to hear from you: Which of the 3 syles of yoga match best with what you feel YOU look for in YOUR yoga pracrice??

What I’m All About...

I’m a spiritually aligned Certified Anusara®Yoga Teacher ▪ Naturotherapist ▪ Travel enthusiast ▪ Energy & Environmental “healer”. My intention is to inspire and help guide people towards living in alignment with their own inner wisdom and with life’s abundance. My classes are designed to bridge the gap between the physical yoga practice and the more philosophical and spiritual practice of this great tradition. Through the body we can understand the Universe!

I don’t just instruct, I teach. I wish for my students to leave feeling like they learned something about themselves that they can then take and apply to their daily lives. Yoga is not meant to be just a physical practice, it is meant to take us somewhere. It is meant to shed our layers of limitation and ignorance (ignorance not necessarily being a bad thing, just a fact that keeps the truth about who we are and what life is all about hidden from our view).

The best classes that I’ve been to have opened me up to new possibilities that I later went on exploring. Whether it was a new way of holding my body that would help resolve an injury or pain, or a teaching that touched me in a way that I had no choice but to see the world in a brighter light. Not all classes will have the same of impact. Most classes plant seeds of transformation that weeks, months, or years later you look back and you say, “Wow, I never noticed, but things have really changed since back then.” But what is important is that we continue to practice, even if our practice is just to hold faith that the positive seeds that were planted in the past will continue to grow through our faith and optimism.

Celebrating the little transformations as they appear, is another thing that I try to remember in my own practice and as I teach. Knowing very well that the small things matter, and that many small transformations lead to bigger shifts and life changing moments. This is a big part of the Yogic Journey: Opening our minds to transformation, but at the same time being willingly patient and grateful for the small victories/messages/lessons that are meant for us along the way.
