Do you find that the "new headlights" are too bright at night? You're not alone. 🚘 It's one the most, if not THE MOST common concern that patients bring up in my practice.

Transport Canada has take notice and wants to hear from Canadians. 👀

😵‍💫 Did you know that alcohol relaxes the eye muscles? This results in confusing messages from our eyes about how far away things are or even where the horizon is. This is why people who have been drinking may have a hard time reaching for things and can end up spilling and stumbling. Now imagine taking contact lenses out in that condition. That’s assuming you even remember to take them out. Cleaning them and putting them away hygienically can be very difficult when your brain and eyes are not communicating properly.

👁️ Prepare your contact lens routine ahead of time so you don’t have to spend time looking around. Better yet, consider getting disposable lenses on nights that you might be at a party.

👓 Alcohol can make your eyes more dry. If you decide that you want to get rid of those lenses at some point in the night, make sure you have your glasses. The last thing you want is to further impair your vision.

🍾 While celebrating, use caution when opening champagne bottles. Ensure the bottle is not pointed towards anyone and ease the cork out carefully; they are under immense pressure and can cause serious injury (see blowout fractures😵‍💫).

Certain sporting activities can also pose a high risk to your eyes. Each year thousands of eye injuries could be prevented if more people wore appropriate protective eyewear while participating in sporting activities (see hockey without full cages).

🥽 Always wear eye protection while participating in the following sporting activities: Ball and puck sports such as hockey, lacrosse, racquetball, squash, badminton, tennis, baseball, and basketball, Paintball, Skiing/Snowboarding.

🕶️ Don’t forget your sunglasses, UV protection is important all year round.

📱 When using phones, tablets, computers and gaming systems, give your eyes a break:uUse the 20-20-20 rule. (Every 20 minutes take a 20 second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.)

Before you wax your skis, you should ensure you’re taking the proper precautions to protect your eyes from tough winter weather. 🌬️

Here are some eye safety tips from the you should consider:

Feeling dry?

During this frosty month people may notice that their skin tends to dry up, but did you know that the same thing can happen to your eyes? Essentially dry eye happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, and because the cold winter air holds less humidity, it can impact our ability to produce a sufficient amount of tears. If you’re experiencing excessively watery eyes, blurry vision and/or the desire to close your eyes, you may be experiencing dry eye. Try using a humidifier this time of year and ensure that the vents in your vehicle aren’t blowing directly at you.

Goggle up. 🥽

Just like playing squash or swimming, the winter also has sports where you should wear eye protection. Whether it’s goggles skiing/snowboarding, or sunglasses to avoid debris and sunlight while snowshoeing, make sure to protect your peepers! By taking these precautions, you can protect yourself against the harsh seasonal conditions. Also, most people are unaware that excessive UV exposure can cause the white part of the eye to become irritated, which can lead to permanent yellow discolouration – also called pinguecula.

Sport your sunglasses.🕶️

Despite the dropping temperature and increased cloud cover, it’s important to always protect your eyes (and skin) against UVA and UVB rays. Your eyes are sensitive to these rays all year round, and we don’t often consider the reflections of the sun off the snow. Overexposure to UV rays (all year round!), has been linked to a multitude of problems, including cataracts, degeneration of the retina, and damage to the cornea. Be sure to select quality specs that have 100% UVA/UVB stickers.

If you’re confused by all the products that are out there to protect your eyes, chat with your optometrist. They can help you select the best shape for your face, and tell you whether your sunglasses meet the right requirement.
