Did you know there are different types of hearing loss?

The type of hearing loss determines how it is treated. For example, if it is conductive hearing loss caused by earwax our audiologist would remove the earwax. If it was sensorineural hearing loss caused by noise exposure we would recommend hearing aids.

Have you ever wondered how you can tell where a sound is coming from?

Our ears work together to create a three-dimensional hearing experience. The brain processes the subtle differences in sound that each ear receives, if a sound comes from the right side it reaches the right ear slightly before it reaches the left. It will also be a little bit louder in the right ear. This is how our brain knows where the sound came from.

This ability is compromised if there is even a small difference in hearing between the ears. For example, a person wearing one hearing aid will hear sounds much louder in that ear. Everything will sound like it is coming from the side that the hearing aid is on, even if it is coming from the opposite side of the head.

Hearing needs to be the same in both ears in order to localize sound. That’s why wearing two hearing aids can help those with hearing loss localize sound.

Rephrase, don’t repeat!

When someone with hearing loss asks us what we said we are often tempted to repeat ourselves word for word just louder. However, this is actually not helpful. For people with hearing loss some sounds and words are easier to hear than others. So, it is best to rephrase your sentence instead of repeating it word for word louder.

And remember, speak clearly, loudly, and slowly so they can follow your sentence. It is also best to look the person in the eyes so they can read your lips as needed.
