In our Kindergarten, watercolour painting is a quiet, nourishing rhythm throughout the week. With soft brushes, flowing colour, and careful preparation, the children enter a gentle mood of creativity and focus. Before we begin, we take time to ready the space together by smoothing the paper, filling small jars with water, and watching as the colours are set out like a simple invitation.

At this age, painting is not about creating a finished picture. It is an experience of colour itself. The children delight in watching hues meet and transform on the page, with a warm yellow becoming golden light and a cool blue spreading like a calm sky or deep water. Through this process, they are strengthening their sense of beauty, patience, and inner quiet.

Watercolour painting also supports the developing will of the young child. Each careful brushstroke asks for presence and intention. The children learn to care for their tools, to move with purpose, and to find joy in the unfolding moment rather than striving for a particular result.

When the paintings are complete, we take time to wash our brushes, pour away the water, and hang the sheets to dry. In these simple moments, the seeds of creativity, reverence, and confidence are gently sown.

In Grades 5 and 6, our mornings have been filled with wonder as we journey into the living story of the Earth. Through hands-on exploration, the children have been discovering the great rock cycle and learning to recognize igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Our walks have become treasure hunts, with keen eyes searching the ground for clues to the planet’s ancient past.

This week, we turned our attention to the ever-changing nature of the Earth itself. Using layered Jell-O as a model of the Earth’s structure, the students experienced in a playful and memorable way how the ground beneath us is in constant motion. With imagination and skill, they built small towns upon the “continental crust,” only to watch them tremble and topple as earthquakes of varying strengths rolled through. There was laughter, surprise, and thoughtful reflection, and, of course, a shared snack to help restore order after the creative chaos.

In every season, children learn not only with their heads but with their hands and hearts, outdoors in all weather, in song and story, in craft and community.

What does a child’s developing brain truly need in the early years?

This week on our blog, we explore the connection between Waldorf education and child development, and how movement, handwork, imagination, and developmentally aligned learning help children build focus, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

At Okanagan Waldorf School and The Early Years Centre, we see every day how educating the whole child, head, heart, and hands, supports healthy growth from the inside out.

We are delighted to share that The Bridge Educational Society has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) through the Community Works Funds program. This grant application was submitted by Roxanne Brierley, whose dedication and steady leadership have been instrumental in securing many grants that continue to support the growth and development of our campus.

These funds will be directed toward an outdoor washroom facility, a long-envisioned project of the Campus Development Committee. This addition will greatly enhance our ability to offer expanded outdoor programming and will support our vision of keeping the campus welcoming and accessible to the wider community. The facility will serve families and visitors enjoying our forest trails, support our gardening community, and provide much-needed convenience for children during their daily forest adventures.

This grant marks an important first step toward fully funding and realizing this project, and we are deeply grateful for the continued support of the RDNO. A special thank-you as well to Rick Fairburn, who has long been a strong advocate for our school and campus initiatives.

We look forward to sharing more as this project unfolds.

In a world where screens are increasingly shaping childhood, many parents are beginning to ask what may be quietly lost along the way. This post explores what excessive screen exposure can take from children and how Waldorf education offers a thoughtful, research-aligned alternative that protects imagination, relationship, and healthy development, right here in Vernon.

One of the highlights of our Winter Garden is the Children’s Store, a cherished Winter Garden tradition!

Each year, we host a special shop just for children, filled with small, handcrafted treasures made with love by our families. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children to pick up gifts for their family (and a little something for themselves).

Think seashells, painted pinecones, origami, tiny felted animals, painted stones, or self-hardening clay ornaments.

The magic is twofold; children find as much joy in creating these treasures as they do in choosing them!

One of the highlights of our Winter Garden is the Magical Puppet Show.

Waldorf puppet shows weave a quiet kind of magic. With soft music, candlelight, and lovingly handmade puppets, familiar stories come to life in a way that feels both wondrous and deeply soothing. Gentle gestures and poetic words invite children into a dreamlike world where imagination awakens and the heart is touched. In this tender atmosphere, stories unfold not just before the eyes, but within the soul.
