Can dogs and cats get diabetes?

Yes, both cats and dogs can develop diabetes. Diabetes mellitus (diabetes for short) is a condition that affects how the body regulates blood sugar (glucose). Diabetes develops when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot respond properly to the insulin it does produce. This process can occur in cats and dogs just as it does in people.
