Somedays are for Therapeutic Recreation and some days it's all business!
Today I took one of my clients for a very long overdue physical. When seniors do not have a spouse or children this is always a step that seems to get missed, however probably one of the most important ones. Sometimes they need someone to take the reigns and encourage them to make their health a priority.
I managed to find her a new GP within walking distance of her home. I like to have a relationship with my client's doctor, as we work closely together ensuring all areas of our clients needs are being met. This is the beauty of owning and operating my own TR business. I also managed many medical offices in my previous career as a Medical Office Assistant, which has helped immensely knowing how to navigate the medical system and understanding medical conditions.π©ββοΈ
I always start off my contract with my clients requesting they have a full physical. It's important to make sure the family and myself are aware of the diagnosis, comorbidities, medications, limitations or any concerns that may interfere with their care plan and ability to carry out activities of daily living and recreation.
Today Miss J had her blood work done and an ECG. We ran to Walmart to get her a new phone set (which I suggested), as having a phone in each room will be helpful since she is legally blind and has mobility issues. While there we also got her groceries for the week. π
Today she hugged me and told me I am now her adopted daughter and that I have done more for her in 6 weeks than she has been able to get done in the past year.π₯° We have tackled income tax, banking, connecting her to a local GP, medical appointments, deep cleaning and organizing her home, washing 8 loads of laundry, putting in safety measures around her house and organizing all her bills in an accordion. π³ I intended to do recreation every week, but sometimes the priorities come first and the fun has to wait. Now that her life is back on track we have big plans to get her plugged in to church, seniors centre, CNIB and making a long list of all the fun things she'd like to do! ππ·πββοΈππββοΈπββοΈπ§ββοΈπ₯§
I guess you could say I've been a blessing and helpful to her giving her a Meaningful Life, however over these past few weeks she's brought feelings of meaning and purpose to me too! β€οΈ It honestly warms my heart to know that I am making a difference in someone else's life.
