Are you travelling this month?
What do you do to boost your immune system and keep germs at bay when you travel?

Vitamin C, Vitamin D, lots of water and a diet rich in veggies for a few days before you take off can help give your body a much needed boost.

And if you do pick something up while travelling, taking antimicrobials like oil of oregano, silver hydrosol or grapefruit seed extract can help kill those unwanted bugs.

A cup of peppermint tea can be soothing, thanks to its multi-tasking menthol oil.

Menthol aids digestion, helps with motion sickness, and freshens stale breath!

Peppermint can also help you relax, so next time you're feeling tense, brew yourself a cup.

You can take it to the next level by growing your own mint leaves for an authentic Moroccan style fresh leaf infusion. Just make sure you plant mint in a pot, it likes to take over the garden!

Garlic has been used to treat various ailments throughout history, having reportedly been a preferred remedy used by Hippocrates, the father of medicine.

Nutritionally garlic does well, containing manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, Selenium, calcium, copper, potassium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin B1.

However this humble seasoning is also a powerful antioxidant with antimicrobial properties. Research has shown garlic to reduce the length of colds by up to 70%, reduce high blood pressure, lower "bad" LDL cholesterol, detoxify the body from lead, and may even help prevent dementia.

Now that the weather is turning cooler, we're spending less time outdoors, and the kids may be spending more time in school - how is your home's air quality?

Here are 3 tips to reduce toxins at home so that you can breathe easier:

1. Stop using aerosol sprays and artificially scented air fresheners. Instead, try using a diffuser or natural pump sprays that rely on essential oils to freshen the air. You can even boil cinnamon sticks or vanilla pods on the stovetop. If unpleasant smells are still an issue, a HEPA filter is efficient at removing odours as well as helping to reduce airborne particulates that may cause allergies or irritation.

2. Choose cleaning products carefully. Be aware of “greenwashing” which is the practice of using clever wording to make products appear more eco-friendly than they actually are. In fact, you can skip store bought products altogether in many cases; vinegar, baking soda, and plain hot water can be surprisingly effective cleaners.

3. Stop using plastics. All plastics leach harmful chemicals such as (but not exclusively) BPA. A stainless steel water bottle and glass or ceramic food containers last much longer without the potential side effects.

Here are 4 ways to support your child's immune system:

1 - Stress Management
Unwinding outside of school is crucial, as stress can impact the immune system. Encourage screen-free, unstructured outdoor play time to expend some of that pent-up energy. Exercise is an effective stress buster and immune strengthener, as is meditation (there are a few great guided meditation apps available for your phone).

2 - A Nutritious Diet
A balanced diet includes eating the rainbow of fruits and vegetables throughout the day, limiting sugar and processed foods, and making sure to start the day with a healthy, satiating breakfast. Healthy ideas include full-fat yoghurt with granola, a boiled egg, or a smoothie that includes a source of healthy fat and protein such as h**p hearts or brazil nuts.

3 - Immune Support Supplements
A high quality kids' daily multivitamin and probiotic
are always a good choice. Adding vitamin C, vitamin D and Zinc on top of that can give the immune system even more help.

Delicious tart cherries are quickly growing in popularity as a fast snack with serious benefits. Tart cherries are loaded with Vitamin C, an antioxidant that is great for the immune system and helps to reduce free radical damage and signs of aging.

High in phytochemicals, including melatonin, tart cherries also help to improve sleep quality and duration. Tart cherry juice is also rich in polyphenols, a potent anti-inflammatory that has been shown to enhance recovery in athletes. Restore, rest and recover with tart cherries!

The superfood status of goji berries reaches back to its medicinal roots in ancient China. Sweet and slightly sour, goji berries most often come dried like raisins.

They are excellent antioxidants for your eyes and skin, improve the immune system, and are helpful for maintaining blood sugar. Goji berries have also been shown to boost energy levels and performance. Pack a healthy punch to your smoothies, salads, and snacks with a handful of these super berries.

Potassium is both a mineral and an electrolyte that conducts electrical impulses throughout the body to keep it in good working order. Electrolytes help with your blood pressure, muscle contractions, nerve impulses, digestion and heart rhythm. Because potassium isn't naturally found within our bodies, it's important to consume the right balance of potassium-rich foods.

These include fruits like bananas, oranges, and kiwi, and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and leafy greens. Potassium is also found in legumes, low-fat milk and yogurt, and lean meats.

Fatigue, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet... these are just a few symptoms of iron deficiency anemia. Iron is responsible for creating hemoglobin, which is the part of our red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body.

To get more iron in your diet, try upping your intake of organic red meats, fish like tuna and salmon, eggs, beans, baked potatoes with skins, dried fruits, and leafy greens.

Feeling blue? Take a short walk alongside blue spaces.

A new study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and BlueHealth project shows that taking a 20-minute walk along blue spaces (areas that prominently feature water) benefits mental health.

The positive effect blue spaces have on mood, vitality, and mental health is immediate.

Take a 20-minute walk around one of these blue spaces and watch your mood improve:
-beaches
-lakes
-rivers
-fountains

Try it out and see for yourself!

08/04/2021

Bitter foods are sweet for your health. When we taste something bitter, it stimulates the body to produce juices and enzymes that give rise to a cascade of benefits throughout the digestive system. It speeds up digestion, reduces post-meal bloating, gas and heartburn. It also helps suppress the appetite to help you avoid that over-full feeling after a meal.

This is why many cultures traditionally include bitter foods in meals, for example a traditional bitter aperitif before dinner such as Vermouth, or a salad with bitter greens such as arugula or radicchio.

Bitter is not a flavour we value as much these days, but its health benefits are clear. If you feel your digestion could use a boost, try taking a "digestive bitters" supplement. A few drops of one of these pungent extracts before meals may provide that little extra oomph that makes the difference.
