Patellar tendinitis, often known as 'jumper's knee,' is a condition where the tendon connecting your kneecap to your shinbone becomes inflamed. 🦵 This can result in pain just below the kneecap during activities like running, jumping, or climbing stairs. 🏃‍♂️🏐 Athletes who engage in sports requiring repetitive jumping or running, such as basketball or volleyball players, are particularly susceptible.

Early signs include pain and stiffness that may worsen over time if left untreated. 🚨 Seeking treatment promptly is crucial to prevent the condition from progressing. Rest, ice packs, and physical therapy are common treatments that can help manage symptoms and prevent further injury. 🧊💪 Don't ignore the warning signs—addressing patellar tendinitis early can make a significant difference in recovery and long-term joint health. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

03/07/2024

🎾 Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common overuse injury affecting the tendons around the elbow. It typically develops from repetitive motions, such as gripping or twisting, rather than just from playing tennis.

😣 Symptoms include pain and tenderness on the outer part of the elbow and sometimes radiating down the forearm. Activities like gripping objects, turning a doorknob, or lifting can exacerbate the pain.

🏋️‍♂️ Tennis elbow frequently occurs in individuals who engage in activities requiring repetitive arm movements, such as tennis players, painters, and plumbers. However, it can affect anyone whose daily tasks involve similar motions.

⚠️ Seeking treatment early is crucial to prevent further injury. Initial management includes rest, icing the affected area, and modifying activities to avoid aggravating the condition. Physical therapy exercises can help strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. In severe cases, medical intervention such as corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.

🚫 Ignoring tennis elbow can lead to chronic pain and limited arm mobility, affecting daily life and potentially requiring more invasive treatments. Therefore, early recognition of symptoms and timely intervention are essential to facilitate recovery and prevent long-term complications.

Tendinitis is a condition that typically arises from repetitive movement, overuse, or injury, leading to microscopic tears in the tendon tissue. Symptoms of tendonitis include pain, tenderness, and swelling around the affected tendon. Movement of the joint may become painful, and there could be a noticeable decrease in range of motion. In some cases, a lump or thickening of the tendon may be felt under the skin.

The impact of tendinitis on daily life can be significant, as it may interfere with work, sports, and everyday activities. Ignoring symptoms or continuing to stress the tendon without proper treatment can worsen the condition, potentially leading to chronic pain and long-term damage.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial in managing tendinitis effectively. Treatment typically involves rest, ice therapy, physical therapy to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Severe cases may require immobilization of the affected joint or, in rare instances, surgical intervention to repair the tendon.

Receiving prompt treatment not only alleviates current symptoms but also reduces the risk of complications and promotes faster recovery. It's important to listen to the body's signals, seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen, and follow through with recommended therapies to regain optimal function and prevent recurrence of tendinitis.

20/06/2024

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common hand conditions that occur when the medial nerve is squeezed or compressed. The median nerve is a major nerve that runs through the hands and forearm that controls the wrist, forearm, hands, fingers, and helps provide sensation to specific parts to the hand and forearm. This syndrome occurs in a variety of ways, however this condition needs to be treated. Symptoms at first may come and go, however they will become more persistent and painful. This is a condition that gets worse with time, if left untreated. With an untreated carpal tunnel syndrome wrist, this can lead to the hands being dysfunctional, loss of sensation in the wrist, weakness in the hands and wrist. If caught early, easy solutions like wearing a wrist splint while sleeping, exercises to keep the nerve active, avoiding activities that put pressure on the nerve, or steroid injections can reverse the damage. If the condition was not caught early, surgery may be the only option to help alleviate the pressure on the nerve.

All in all, if you suspect you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome please give us a call at (905) 471-1000 to get treated immediately and get to feeling your best self again! Please visit www.leapphysiorehab.ca for more information.

AVOID STIFF NECK WITH TRAVELLING!

Whether you’re travelling across the country with your family to see the sights of Canada, or you’re on a long-haul flight for one of those tedious business meetings, you’ve probably experienced some sort of stiffness or pain in the neck along the way (no, not those energetic kids in the backseat)!

Here are three handy tips to keep in mind, for the next time you travel:
Take a Break

A common problem that is associated with all the varying travel methods available is the lack of space that is provided for us to move. Naturally, with a lack of space, there is a restriction on our ability to change positions. Maintaining a particular position will cause the muscles surrounding the neck to fatigue, therefore resulting in pain! So, as a general rule of thumb (and I know this will draw out the arrival time) try and have a break every hour if travelling by car, allowing you to get out and walk around, and change those nasty positions. If in a plane, every 30 minutes to walk up and down the aisle a few times would be perfect!

Stretch it out

Tight and fatigued muscles love to be stretched! To maintain full range of motion, every 30-60 minutes, look over each shoulder 3-5 times; look up and down 3-5 times, and tilt you head for side to side 3-5 times.

Use Supports

Cervical pillows (C-shape pillows) are a great way to aid the postural muscles at the back of the neck, whether in a car or on a plane. They must be large enough to support the natural curve of the neck, but not so large that the roll pushes the entire body away from the seat. They should also have large enough side cushioning to prevent excessive side flexion and support the neck when sleeping.

Happy travelling!

Complete ruptures of the ACL require first a surgical repair called ACL reconstruction followed by a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

The most common mechanism of injury is when the knee pivots and twists. For example, when the knee receives a direct impact from the front while the leg is in a stable position or when the knee is forced to make sharp changes in movement such as an abrupt stop from high speed.

Pre-operatively, a comprehensive exercise program will help to restore full range of motion, establish neuromuscular control and strength. A firm foundation pre-operatively allows for quicker return to pre-injury function post-operatively.

At Leap Physio & Rehab, our facility is fully equipped to allow for exceptional rehabilitation from day one to return to sport.

Shoulder injuries are common affecting approximately 30% of the general population. These injuries can be related to overuse for example swimming, throwing, computer work or overhead repetitive activities. Often these injuries can be resolved with rotator cuff and shoulder blade strengthening programs to help prevent the need for injections or surgery.

Other times, there is a sudden onset after a fall or tackle on the sports field resulting sometimes in dislocation or slipping of the shoulder joint (subluxation). At times surgical intervention is required followed by a comprehensive co-ordination and strength training program to prevent ongoing instability and return to sport/activity.

Here at Leap Physio & Rehab, we have a comprehensive understanding of what is required to return to your activity whether it be swimming or throwing to get you back to your best.

A groin strain is a common injury that occurs when the muscles of the inner thigh are stretched too far or torn.
It often occurs during activities that involve quick changes of direction, such as running, jumping, or twisting.

Symptoms of a groin strain include pain and stiffness in the inner thigh, as well as swelling and bruising. In severe cases, there may be difficulty walking or standing.

Treatment for a groin strain typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to reduce pain and swelling.

Physiotherapy plays important role to help strengthen the muscles and prevent future injuries.
It's important to seek medical attention if the pain is severe or does not improve with conservative treatment, as a more serious injury may be present.

Plantar fasciitis: one of the most common causes of heel pain.

Causes : Plantar fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As you get up and move, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or when you stand up after sitting.

Procedure: Tension and stress on the fascia can cause small tears. Repeated stretching and tearing of the facia can irritate or inflame it, although the cause remains unclear in many cases of plantar fasciitis.

Complications: Ignoring plantar fasciitis can result in chronic heel pain that hinders your regular activities. You're likely to change your walk to try to avoid plantar fasciitis pain, which might lead to foot, knee, hip or back problems.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain and tenderness throughout the body, as well as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and other symptoms.
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to abnormalities in how the brain and spinal cord process pain signals.

Treatment for fibromyalgia typically involves a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and therapy. Common medications include pain relievers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants.
Lifestyle changes may include regular exercise, stress reduction techniques, and a healthy diet. Therapy can also be helpful, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other types of talk therapy

It's important to note that fibromyalgia can be a challenging condition to manage, and there is no cure.
However, with the right treatment and support, many people with fibromyalgia are able to lead fulfilling and productive lives.

19/06/2023

Achilles tendinitis is a condition characterized by inflammation and irritation of the Achilles tendon, which is the large tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.
It is commonly caused by overuse or repetitive strain, often from activities such as running, jumping, or sudden increases in physical activity.
Tight calf muscles can also contribute to Achilles tendinitis by putting additional stress on the tendon.
Symptoms typically include pain, tenderness, and swelling in the back of the heel or lower calf.
Treatment may involve rest, ice, compression, elevation, physical therapy, and in some cases, medication or orthotic devices.
It's important to seek prompt medical attention if you suspect you may have Achilles tendinitis to prevent it from becoming a chronic condition and to receive appropriate care.

19/06/2023

Sciatica refers to the pain, numbness, or weakness that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and runs from the lower back down to the legs and feet.

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc in the lower back, which puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. Other causes include spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, and piriformis syndrome.

Symptoms of sciatica can vary depending on the underlying cause but commonly include pain, numbness, weakness, difficulty standing for a long period of time.

Treatment for sciatica depends on the underlying cause and severity of the symptoms. Options may include pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medications, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and in severe cases, surgery.

19/06/2023

Tech neck syndrome, also known as text neck syndrome, is a relatively new medical condition that is caused by prolonged use of electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
It is characterized by pain, stiffness, and soreness in the neck and shoulders, and can also cause headaches and upper back pain.

The condition is caused by the repeated forward bending of the neck that occurs when using electronic devices. This puts a strain on the neck muscles, which can lead to inflammation and pain. Over time, this can cause permanent damage to the neck and spine.

To prevent tech neck syndrome, it is important to take frequent breaks when using electronic devices, maintain good posture, and stretch regularly. Additionally, adjusting the height and position of electronic devices can also help to reduce the strain on the neck.
If you are experiencing symptoms of tech neck syndrome, it is important to seek medical advice.

Your doctor may recommend physical therapy, pain medication, or other treatments to help alleviate your symptoms and prevent further damage.

Pain on outer side of hip may be related to hip bursitis!

The bursa is a fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between the bone and soft tissues, such as muscles and tendons.
The most common symptoms of trochanteric bursitis include pain, tenderness, and swelling in the hip area, which can often radiate down to the thigh or buttock.

Pain is usually aggravated by activities such as walking, running, climbing stairs, or prolonged periods of sitting.

Trochanteric bursitis can be caused by several factors, including overuse, repetitive stress, injury, or degeneration due to aging.
It can also be associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or gout.

Treatment for trochanteric bursitis usually involves a combination of rest, ice therapy, and physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the hip muscles. Anti-inflammatory medications or corticosteroid injections may be used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the inflamed bursa.
