Thinking of having a New Years party🎉 or a get together with friends and family for New Years?

Before planning your New Years gathering, read these food safety🍽️tips from eatright.org:
1. Plan Properly: make sure your kitchen is equipped for safe food handling (i.e. have soap, paper towels and a thermometer in your kitchen).
2. Shop safely: keep food safety in mind as you shop (i.e. keep raw meat, poultry and seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods).
3. While working in the kitchen, make sure everyone washes their hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after handling food.
4. Perishables or cooked foods should be put away within 2 hours. You can refrigerate or freeze any leftovers but be sure to use them within 3 to 4 days!

As we approach the holiday season, it may be almost impossible to avoid being around foods that aren’t the healthiest. It could be that chocolate box in the breakroom or your mother’s apple pie at the holiday party!

Before reaching for that shortbread cookie, checkout these 5 tips from Health Canada about eating healthier during the holidays:

1. Choose healthier foods or offer healthy options if hosting a holiday event (i.e. choose whole grain foods, make water your drink of choice, eat plenty of veggies and fruits).
2. Be mindful (i.e. take time to eat, pay attention to your food choices, notice your feelings of hunger and fullness).
3. Give yourself permission to enjoy your food and to eat without judgement. Focus instead on having smaller portions and take the time to savour your food instead.
4. Think about your drinks (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks) as they can add additional calories, sodium, sugars or saturated fat to your meal.
5. Think beyond food to celebrate (i.e. celebrate with an activity like going for a hike).

The Community Care Team was out in the community! Our team had a chance to see many friendly faces within the community this fall to spread the word about our programs and services. We had the opportunity to connect with community members and many community partners.

Thanks to Carefirst Seniors & Community Services Association, Eastern York Region North Durham Ontario Health Team (EYRND OHT) and Oak Valley Health for having us be apart of their events. We also want to give a special thanks to everyone that came out and visited our table !🍂

Happy Nurse Practitioner Week! In recognition of Nurse Practitioner Week (November 9-15, 2025), we acknowledge the critical role that Nurse Practitioners (NPs) play in our health-care system and the difference they make every day providing compassionate, patient-centred care.

Nurse Practitioners are licensed health professionals that provide comprehensive health and can assess, diagnose, prescribe medications, monitor, and educate their patients on managing chronic illness and other issues.

Our Nurse Practitioner on our Community Care Team can see patients for primary care and leads our Primary Care Sexual Health Clinic. To learn more about our Primary Care Sexual Health Clinic or to book an appointment, please visit our website: https://ow.ly/FLqg50XqIfU 🩺❤️

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Orange Shirt Day is a day for listening, education, reflection, truth-telling and taking action. We commemorate the residential school experience and recognize the inter-generational impact residential schools have caused. On this day, we honour the children who never returned home as a result of residential schools and the healing journey of the Survivors and their families.

Show your support for this day by attending events within the community such as the ‘National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Film Screening’ at the Markham Public Library's Milliken Mills Branch from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. To register, visit : https://ow.ly/ZjuL50X4x3C.
