March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month 🩵– an important reminder of the impact of colorectal cancer and the value of early detection. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths among both men and women in Canada.

Screening📋 is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk. When detected early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable. Individuals between the ages of 45 to 74 years old who are not at high risk, are encouraged to complete a stool-based screening test (FIT test) every two years.

3 signs you should not ignore:
1. Changes in your bowel(bathroom) habits
2. Blood in your stool
3. Pain or discomfort (i.e. the abdomen, back, buttocks, re**um or legs)

It is also important to note that colorectal cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in individuals under 50 years of age. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, do not wait – regardless of your age or screening eligibility. Please consult your healthcare provider promptly.

As Nutrition Month🍏comes to an end, we want to reflect on all the ways that food can be more than just a way to nourish our bodies!

Good nutrition helps to nourish our minds and improves our mental health. Food connects us to families and communities and is part of our culture. Since there is an emotional connection to food, we need to learn to control our emotional connections with food.

Did you know that pharmacists do more than just dispense medications or work in a pharmacy?

March is Pharmacy Appreciation Month💙! This month we recognize pharmacists as essential members of the healthcare system. Although pharmacists are known for being drug experts, their role goes far beyond this. Pharmacists can:
- review prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to assess for potential drug interactions
- administer some injections such as the flu vaccine
- prescribe for some minor ailments
- support chronic disease management such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol
- provide support to help you quit smoking

Our Community Care Team has a pharmacist that can provide education on safe and effective use of medications, assist with smoking cessation, support with sleep issues and more. You can book an appointment with our pharmacist by calling 289-859-1300 or visit our website for more information. Check link in our bio.

Have you ever wondered what the safest way is to throw away🗑️ unused or expired medications💊?

Prescription medications do not belong in the trash can, they should not be poured down the sink, nor should they be flushed down the toilet! These methods are unsafe for the environment.

You can dispose of unwanted medications using 3 simple steps:

1. Check expiry dates and consult with a healthcare provider (e.g., community pharmacist)
2. Put medications into a clear bag but keep liquids and creams in their original container. Remove any personal information.
3. Find a location that accepts medication drop offs.

Did you know that people of African heritage have a higher chance of developing heart disease and stroke?

According to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes can develop at younger ages in Black communities – increasing their chance of heart disease and stroke.

This Black History Month, we are raising awareness about how ethnicity can impact heart health❤️.

Protect your heart by getting regular blood pressure checks✔️, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active and managing stress.

Speak with a healthcare provider about your risk. Small steps can make a big difference!
