A happy Friday indeed!

Today we celebrated our first in person multidisciplinary rounds at DMC Markham.

Kudos to the Nephrology team at the Scarborough Health Network (SHN), for also being the first program to allocate dedicated onsite renal dietary support for all their patients dialyzing at DMC.

In the picture, from left to right is Erik (SHN Renal Dietitian assigned to DMC), Marianne (DMC Team Leader - RN) and Dr. Ting (SHN Nephrologist and DMC Markham Medical Director).

And, to mark the occasion we had cupcakes and cake. Though to be fair, that was to celebrate a special birthday, as what better way to spend a birthday than with your team at DMC. 😉

Exciting news for our community! 👋

Starting Monday, DMC Markham is proud to welcome Mackenzie Health’s Kidney Care Team to our building at 7300 Warden Ave.

With the launch of their new General Nephrology, Multi-Kidney Care, Glomerulonephritis, and Diabetes clinics, patients connected to the Mackenzie Health program, including many of our own DMC patients, will benefit from improved access to their care team, closer to home.

This milestone is a testament to the shared vision, collaboration, and trust between our teams. It’s one of a number of examples of how collaborating with our various regional renal programs continue to elevate care and be a positive force for change in our system.

A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to bringing this project to life.

Looking forward to an exciting first day on Monday!

When our team ran out of options to donate our used equipment, we turned to a public posting online. Through that we discovered the Canadian Gambian Youths Development Association. They informed us that their home country of Gambia had only one dialysis unit for the country of over 2.5 million people! The dialysis unit at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital was critically under resourced and was functioning with only 3 working dialysis machines.

While we had already donated most of our replaced dialysis machines; we were able to secure the hospital two dialysis machines, IV pumps, a weigh scale, and 8 procedure chairs. The association organized the pickup of the equipment and safely shipped it to Gambia.

To our surprise, the national news organization GRTS TV shared the amazing story that led to this donation. Now that we have established this partnership, we hope to continue donating to support the Gambian healthcare system in the future.

This past fall our DMC Markham team helped one of our patients become the oldest person in the world to undergo a successful kidney transplant!

💊Kidney patients face a much higher risk of encountering medication related side effects and harm due to their condition. 💊

This is why we were so thrilled to see the launch of the Kidney Care Pharmacy Team, an innovative new program to help train and certify community pharmacies to properly care for kidney patients.

We look forward to working with the Kidney Care Pharmacy Team and their certified pharmacies to elevate the quality of care our patients receive from their community pharmacies. 👏👏

Ontario recently announced that dialysis patients were included in its first ever publicly funded high-risk older adult RSV vaccine program. 💉

Over the holidays our team at DMC worked with the Public Health departments in York, Durham and Peterborough regions to help us access the vaccines.

This week our team helped to vaccinate and protect over 100 of our eligible patients. 💪
