Welcome to the Athletic Therapy Ontario Concussion Month Awareness series of public information.
Every September, Ontario health care acknowledges the risk of CONCUSSION to people of all ages. Concussion awareness month, includes a concussion awareness week that includes Rowan's Law Day (September 25). Ontario is the only Canadian province with concussion legislation. Rowan Stringer was a 17-year-old, female high school rugby player in Ontario, Canada, who aspired to become a nurse. She was a competitive athlete, proud to be captain of her high school’s rugby team. Rowan collapsed on the playing field during a match game on May 8, 2013 and died four days later. She died from SIS Second Impact Syndrome, having suffered multiple head injuries while playing high school rugby, including one just weeks before the fatal injury. Registered Ontario Athletic Therapists are trained in point-of-injury care, including concussions.
This post focuses on "Concussion Awareness".
Athletic Therapy Ontario (AT-ON) was honoured to participate, with former MPP Lisa MacLeod and Rowan's Dad, Gordon, in the initial working group that resulted in the concussion legislation.
