OSTA Tribute to Special Olympics Founder
Dr. Frank Hayden dead at age 96.

OSTA wishes to acknowledge the passing of Dr. Hayden, whose groundbreaking research in the 1960s produced a body of work that challenged the misconception that people with intellectual disabilities could not participate in or enjoy the benefits of exercise and recreational sports. His research was recognized by the Kennedy Foundation in the USA and led to a collaboration that produced the 1968 Special Olympics in Chicago. Many Ontario Athletic Therapists work with youth and athletes with a range of intellectual challenges, such as autism and Down syndrome. Hayden was born in Windsor, ON and grew up in St. Catharine's. His work was a blessing to many.

Note:
Hayden served as executive director of the Special Olympics from 1968 to 1972, founded and led the Office of European Affairs for Special Olympics International in Paris from 1988 to 1990, and was a special consultant to the Canadian Special Olympics from 1994 to 2000. He was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, and has a school named after him in Burlington, Ont.

ParticipACTION data tells a story about women and Moms that demands attention. While only one in three adults meets Canada's muscle- and bone-strengthening recommendations, the gap is wider among women.

Athletic Therapists can help women fill that gap, particularly during key life cycles, such as motherhood. This Mother's Day, let's celebrate STRONG MOMs.

OSTA honours May 5 as Red Dress Day to acknowledge missing indigenous girls and women.

Red Dress Day, observed annually on May 5th, is a National Day of Awareness and remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S). Originating from Métis artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project, the day uses empty red dresses to symbolize the violence against Indigenous women, who face disproportionately high rates of violence in Canada.

Ontario Athletic Therapists' podcast welcomes Wheelchair Canada's Michael Frogley for a post-2026 Winter Paralympics discussion on para athletes, technology breakthroughs, and the role of Athletic Therapists in injury prevention and performance care.

Podcast Highlight
"One of the things I always said about our Athletic Therapists is they would have the final say in terms of go/no-go or play/no-play. And so while I might be, as a coach, wanting to play an athlete, what I always told our players was that if our athletic therapist said you were healthy to go, if they said you're not, you're not, that's it, full stop. So that's where I placed them in terms of the hierarchy and decision-making. They actually had final say on who was going to play, and they determined it," Mike Frogley.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month 💙

At the Ontario Sports and Athletic Therapists Association, we recognize the strength and resilience of individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. Movement is medicine—and Athletic Therapists play an important role in helping people with parkinson's maintain mobility, balance, and confidence through tailored exercise and rehabilitation programs.

Together, we can raise awareness, support our communities, and advocate for the power of active care in improving quality of life.
