A***n Fazeli was just 27 when a visit to the Emergency Department at Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) revealed a life-threatening tumour. With cancer spreading fast, every second counted — and MSH was ready.

What followed was a journey of urgent care, leading-edge treatment, and unwavering hope. Along the way, A***n found moments of joy, too — including proposing to his now-wife Brittany at MSH.

Six years later, he’s cancer-free and newly married. His story is a powerful reminder of how access to care — close to home — can change everything.

Andy Zhou is a Nurse Practitioner in Cardiology at Markham Stouffville Hospital, where a commitment to care runs deep — both professionally and personally.

Andy comes from a family deeply rooted in health care. His father was a cardiovascular surgeon and his mother was a radiologist before immigrating to Canada. Both his parents continued to work in the medical field after they arrived. From a young age, Andy was inspired to follow a similar path, and health care has always felt like a natural calling.

“My favourite part of my job is working collaboratively with patients and their families to improve their health and quality of life,” says Andy. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see patients recover and regain their strength.”

We raised the Pan-African flag at Markham Stouffville Hospital and Uxbridge Hospital to commemorate Emancipation Day. This day stands as a powerful reminder — not only of the unimaginable hardships endured by enslaved peoples — but also of their resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit in the face of injustice.

Today we pause to reflect on the significance of this day and share our collective journey toward equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Together we must continue to honour the past, take action in the present, and shape a more just and inclusive future.

When we stepped into these roles, we knew we had to bring our teams together, says Leanne White and Teresa Givelas. That simple idea sparked big change.

As managers working in Mental Health at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Leanne and Teresa are leading the charge in transforming how we care for patients by bridging the gap between inpatient and outpatient mental health services. Their integrated approach — supported by leaders like Dr. Amir Barsoum and social worker Jacqueline Shand — is creating seamless and compassionate care.

Together, they’re shaping a model where collaboration, continuity, and empathy drive better outcomes and healthier communities by delivering care that considers the whole person — both in hospital and beyond.

We are proud to welcome to Uxbridge Hospital the first two family medicine residents to join Uxbridge Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU).

This is the result of the strong partnership we have with The University of Toronto Department of Family and Community Medicine and Uxbridge Health Centre. Together we’re expanding access to hands-on training in rural and community-based care — while helping shape the future of family medicine close to home.

"Our goal is to inspire these future family doctors to stay and build their careers here by showing them just how fulfilling rural and community-based family medicine can be," says Dr. Aisha Husain, Site Director for Uxbridge FMTU.

One of the stories featured in our 2024/2025 Year in Review — Shaping the future of care together — highlights Teresa Givelas and Leanne White, managers in our Mental Health department who have bridged the gaps between inpatient and outpatient mental health care at Markham Stouffville Hospital through an integrated approach.

“When we stepped into these roles, we really felt the need to merge our teams,” says Leanne. “I think that really has been the key to our success and we have built on that foundation from the start. We care about each other, and we show that to our patients and their families by treating our clients and families like we would want to treat our own.”

The integrated care model addresses both the clinical and emotional needs of patients, provides continuity of care, and is central to achieving better health outcomes and community well-being.

We’re always looking for smart ways to improve how we care for our patients. That’s why we’ve introduced a new digital tracking system for surgical instruments that helps our teams know exactly where every tool is at every stage — from cleaning to the operating room, and back again.

It’s already helping us:

▪️ Cut down on surgical instrument waste and improve inventory management
▪️ Improve surgical tray turnaround times
▪️ Support safer, more efficient surgeries by replacing manual processes
▪️ Give our teams quicker access to the information they need
▪️ Invest in staff education and ongoing improvements

Behind every surgery is a team working hard to make things run smoothly. With this new system, we’re ensuring our Medical Device Reprocessing Department has the tools to do just that.
