Happy Family Day!

Blending home and hospital has always come naturally to the Lougheed family. In 1982, when Dr. Eileen Lougheed was a young mother, she set up a full‑service medical clinic in the basement of their Unionville home. Her children would walk back from school for lunch, wander into the clinic after class, and occasionally help with small tasks — medicine was simply part of everyday life.

A decade later, in 1992, Dr. Eileen moved her practice to Markham Stouffville Hospital, where she also helped establish palliative care. Today, her children are no strangers to either the field of medicine or the hospital. Dr. Daryl and Dr. Justan Lougheed — carry on her commitment to compassionate care.

Their family reminds us that care is more than a profession — it’s something we pass down, nurture, and share.

Oak Valley Health’s new chemical analyzers are delivering high-quality results while significantly streamlining laboratory workflows. 🔬

At Markham Stouffville Hospital alone, the analyzer can complete up to 450 tests per hour 🚀 — an incredible advantage for a lab that completes more than 2.5 million chemistry and immunoassay tests annually. 📊

“The systems offer precision, reliability, and faster operation,” says Dr. Golnar Rasty, Chief of the Department of Laboratory Medicine. “Fully automated, they produce highly sensitive results consistently and in less time. When we maximize the information from every blood sample, we can detect issues earlier and respond to patient needs sooner.”

Community Health Clinic Stouffville’s cervical screening pop-up has been extended until March 31.

Cervical cancer is preventable with regular screenings using an HPV test. Tests will be done by an all-female nurse practitioner team.

The pop-up is for those 25 and older who are due or overdue. Care kits that contain health information, bandages, feminine hygiene items, lip balm, and other essentials will be provided.

After dedicating 35 years to caring for patients at Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital, Dr. Henry Solow suddenly found himself seeing the hospital from a new perspective.

While travelling abroad, Dr. Solow suffered cardiac arrest and was saved by his son’s quick action. When it came time for advanced care and recovery, there was no question where he wanted to be — the hospital he helped shape and the community he calls home.

February is Heart Health Month and stories like Dr. Solow’s remind us how access to specialized cardiac care can make all the difference when it's a heartbeat away from home.

Meet Paul Husbands, Stockless Inventory Attendant, JIT. Paul has worked at Oak Valley Health for the past five years and helps ensure departments and units within the organization are stocked adequately — an essential part of the patient care journey.

“The best part of my job is being able to interact with my coworkers daily. I love showing up every day and being able to help them do their jobs,” says Paul. “There are challenging days of course; when stock is on back order, for example. But our team is usually able to problem-solve and find a solution together.”

We’re excited to share that our Paediatric Diabetes Clinic has officially moved to a bright, modern new space, in the C. Donald Brodie Building at Markham Stouffville Hospital.

This move brings together our Paediatric Diabetes Clinic, Paediatric Lifestyle Clinic, and Endocrine Clinic in one welcoming, purpose‑built location — making it easier for children, youth, and families to access coordinated, integrated care.

Founded in 1990, our Tracey Rubinoff Paediatric Diabetes Clinic has grown into a regional centre of excellence, serving families across York Region and beyond. It continues to be recognized for its leadership in advancing care for children living with chronic conditions.

The new space offers more room for teaching, private consultations, and family education, along with a brighter, more comfortable environment designed with patients in mind.

We’re proud to continue supporting families with the high‑quality, compassionate care they deserve — now in a space that reflects that commitment. 💙
