This is a great read for why we as foot care nurses ask certain questions!
Why Medications Matter in Foot Care 👣💊
As Foot Nurses, we don’t just treat nails and skin — we treat the whole client.
Many commonly prescribed medications can directly impact:
• Circulation
• Skin integrity
• Nerve sensation
• Nail health
• Wound healing
Understanding a client’s medication profile helps us:
✔️ Anticipate risks
✔️ Modify treatment safely
✔️ Prevent complications
✔️ Know when to escalate care
Medications such as statins, diabetes meds, diuretics, blood pressure drugs, steroids, anticoagulants, and chemotherapy agents can all present with foot-specific side effects — from neuropathy and delayed healing to fragile skin, swelling, bruising, and increased infection risk.
🧠 This is why medication review is not optional — it’s essential clinical thinking.
Use this awareness to:
• Ask better intake questions
• Document more thoroughly
• Educate clients confidently
• Protect both your client and your license
📌 Important reminder:
Clients should never stop or change medications without direction from their GP, Nurse Practitioner, or Pharmacist — but we play a critical role in noticing early foot-related changes.
💬 How often are you seeing medication-related foot changes in your practice lately?
