Ladies - you hit menopause and suddenly it’s harder to lose weight. Why? You estrogen and progesterone levels decrease causing your metabolism to slow. You may feel defeated but you are not-

Strength training, or a weight-resistance exercise program, helps build muscle mass and improve metabolism. Strength training also helps you maintain bone mass. Because you lose muscle mass as you age, add strength training to your workouts, if you haven't before.

My suggestion is start building that muscle early and be prepared to fight back against body changes as you age. Put yourself first - you deserve it.

So when you meal plan- and you cut carbs and drop weight- do you know why?

Carbohydrates, or carbs, cause the body to store extra water. When we eat carbs, the energy that we do not use right away is stored as glycogen molecules. Each gram (g) of glycogen comes with 3 g of water.

Cutting down on carbs is a quick way to use up the glycogen stores, which means that the water weight will also be reduced. You need glycogen stores to build muscle - more muscle you build more fat you can burn naturally. So please don’t just cut carbs out- it’s about healthy balance.

In theory - the less you eat the more weight you will lose. Calories in vs calories out.

But…… this is incorrect. Many of my clients come to me under eating and have been struggling to lose weight. When you don’t eat enough - your body goes into survival mode. Breaking down muscle for energy and your metabolism slows down. Body is under stress - you damage your metabolism and store fat which halts any weigh loss. Leading to your frustration with dieting.

Shift workers! Do you notice you crave carbs and are hungry on nightshift?

When a person sleeps, leptin levels normally rise, subduing the need to eat by reassuring the brain that energy reserves are adequate for the time. However, sleep deprivation increases ghrelin levels, while at the same time lowers leptin levels in the blood.

Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. The only way to combat the hunger is by eating a diet consisting of high protein and lots of fibre.

When that hunger hormone kicks in it’s easy to eat unhealthy and 1000 or more calories til you feel satiated. Choose protien in these moments- will make you full and decrease the hunger feeling.

Adequate sleep is best way to balance your leptin and ghrelin levels naturally.
