Our history began on June 8, 1908, when Charles Johnson opened a funeral home on the corner of Maple Avenue and 2nd Street S.E. During the 1920’s, he purchased the Bridgeman Funeral Home located in the 500 block of 3rd Street downtown. In 1931, Charles Pattison and his brother-in-law, Carman Wilson, responded to an ad in the Canadian Funeral Director Magazine and moved from Ontario with a 1928 Studebaker Hearse to purchase the funeral business and attached residence. One year later, Charles assumed sole ownership of the firm and shortened the name to the Pattison Funeral Home. The Leonard home on the corner of 2nd Street and 5th Avenue was acquired in 1936, and after renovations this became both the Pattison Home as well as the funeral home. During 1946, Gordon Anderson moved from Edmonton to complete his apprenticeship with Charles Pattison. On July 1, 1957, Gordon Anderson became the new owner but retained the longstanding good name. After several renovations, and the acquisition of three adjacent lots, Gordon built a new funeral home behind the old one before demolishing the old Leonard home. On the firm’s 65th Anniversary in 1972, this new building was opened. On May, 1976, Derek and Leslee Martin purchased the Pattison Funeral Home, and 10 years later, Gregg & Derek Martin Jr. Our latest chapter began on November 30. 1994, when fire completely destroyed the building at 480 2nd Street S.E. After as much planning and dreaming as was possible this building was opened in September 1995. With 87 years behind us, we designed the building to serve the needs of the people in this area well into the next century.

Navigating the holidays after a loss can be especially challenging. We’ve compiled some useful tips from The Grief Recovery Institute to help with the experience, but if you find yourself in need of more guidance, contact us at 403.526.2214

Tips for Grieving During the Holidays:

Don’t Isolate Yourself. It’s normal and natural to feel lost and alone―but Don’t Isolate―even if you have to force yourself to be with people and participate in normal activities.

Don’t misuse food or alcohol to cover up or push down your feelings. As children, when we were sad about something, we were often told, “Don’t feel bad. Here have a cookie, you’ll feel better.” The cookie doesn’t make the child feel better, it makes the child feel different and the real cause of the sadness is not addressed. When we get older, alcohol and drugs are used for the same wrong reasons―to mask feelings of sadness.

Talk about your feelings, but don’t expect a quick fix. It’s essential to have someone you trust to talk to about your memories and the feelings they evoke. Ask your friend to just listen to you and not try to fix you. You’re sad, not broken, you just need to be heard.

While it’s important to talk about your feelings, don’t dwell on them. Telling the same sad story over and over is not helpful―in fact, it can establish and cement a relationship to your pain. Better to just make a simple statement of how you feel in the moment. For example, say, “I just had a sad feeling of missing him.”
Time doesn’t heal—actions do. The myth that time heals a broken heart is just that, a myth. Time can’t heal a broken heart any more than air can jump into a flat tire. Time just goes by. It’s the actions you take within time that can help you feel better.

The cold weather brings familiar safety concerns for those venturing out. If you’re attending a funeral service this winter, remember:

Dress Warmly – Utilize Layers You can always remove outer layers once indoors, but graveside services can be bitterly cold.

Plan for Difficult Weather - Leave early to allow extra travel time and choose safe parking spots. Winter roads, blowing snow, and icy conditions can delay even short trips. Arriving a few minutes early helps you avoid rushing in stressful weather.

Bring Practical Comfort Items - Hand warmers, tissues, lip balm, and a small umbrella can make a big difference. If the service includes a graveside portion, consider extra socks or insulated insoles to keep your feet warm while standing still.

Be Mindful of Others’ Health and Safety - Hold doors for people who may be unsteady on icy walkways, offer arm support when appropriate, and avoid crowding near entryways where floors can become slippery. Winter funerals often gather people of all ages—your small acts of care go a long way.

ONE AT REST

Think of me as one at rest,
for me you should not weep
I have no pain no troubled thoughts
for I am just asleep

The living thinking me that was,
is now forever still
And life goes on without me now,
as time forever will.

If your heart is heavy now because
I've gone away
Dwell not long upon it friend
For none of us can stay

Those of you who liked me,
I sincerely thank you all
And those of you who loved me,
I thank you most of all.

And in my fleeting lifespan,
as time went rushing by
I found some time to hesitate,
to laugh, to love, to cry

Matters it now if time began
If time will ever cease?
I was here, I used it all,
and now I am at peace.

Remembrance Day invites us to slow down, reflect, and offer gratitude. We remember those who stood for freedom and peace — the soldiers, nurses, and countless others who gave of themselves so that future generations could live in safety and hope.

Today and always, we honour their memory and the values they defended. Lest we forget.

The cost of funerals is steadily climbing and life insurance won’t cover the cost of a funeral up-front. Interest on a savings account won’t keep up with the cost of inflation. That’s why we are passionate about pre-planning education.

It’s not just about planning for your services, it’s about planning for your family’s financial peace of mind.
