My son got a concussion at soccer yesterday. Today, I treated him in my office with red light therapy and PEMF—and within minutes, his headache was gone and he said he felt way better.

Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation) has been studied for its ability to help the brain heal after concussions. Near-infrared wavelengths (typically 660–850nm) pe*****te the skull and stimulate mitochondrial function, increasing ATP (cell energy), reducing inflammation, and improving blood flow to damaged tissue.

These have been so life-changing for me—I had to share.

Have you heard of PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy? ⚡️ I don’t want to get too personal, but as many of you know, I’ve battled serious neurological health issues that started in 2018. While some major problems have subsided, I still deal with nerve pain, muscle spasms, twitching, weakness, seizures (which I call “time gaps”), and some pretty scary mental health symptoms. 😔

The Real Secret to Anti-Aging: Yin Yoga

As a yin yoga instructor, yoga therapist, and structural integrator specializing in fascial work and reconstruction, I’ve studied the body’s connective tissue extensively. The truth? There’s no secret to how yin yoga works—perhaps the world has just forgotten.

Lately, I’ve noticed more and more people turning to high-tech devices promising to hydrate fascia, stimulate collagen, or release tension—but our bodies already know how to do this naturally. Instead of relying on external gadgets, the simple practice of yin yoga may be all you need.

How Yin Yoga Supports Anti-Aging:

Relaxation Isn't Optional—It's Essential for Healing:

When people hear sports massage, they often think of deep pressure, intense muscle work, and no-nonsense pain relief. While I do focus on fixing pain caused by tension (and teach you how to do it too!), I also believe that relaxation is the key to faster recovery and lasting results.

The Science Behind Relaxation & Pain Relief:

Your body heals best when it’s in a parasympathetic state (aka “rest and digest”). When you’re stressed, tense, or in pain, your nervous system stays in fight-or-flight mode, making it harder for muscles to release, circulation to improve, and healing to happen. That’s why I focus on reducing tension, increasing blood flow, and getting your body into a relaxed state—because healing only happens when your body allows it.

Massage therapy, whether it's sports massage, deep tissue, or relaxation-focused, works through the same physiological processes:

The Importance of Expertise in Therapy and Addressing Misconceptions:

Yesterday, I shared a post highlighting the various modalities I offer under massage therapy, all of which are recognized within our scope of practice and can be billed accordingly. This includes red light therapy, TENS, cupping, kinesiotaping, and percussion therapy, which many practitioners in town also offer.

Did you know I am also trained in Indian Head Massage and Face Lift Massage? None of these are new—they’re just part of my toolbox as a therapist. I mention this now because I didn’t list them among my certifications in my last post, and, well, heaven forbid someone thinks I “stole” their face massage & tapping idea too.

Twenty years in this industry—I’ve done it all.

Separately, in a private conversation, I mentioned to a new business owner (who is not in the therapy or esthetics field) that I had a machine they also owned while I was placing an order for the product needed to operate it. This was simply an attempt at collaboration to reduce costs for both of us. Instead, it led to accusations that I had “stolen their idea” regarding this machine and red light therapy, along with claims that the city “isn’t big enough for both of us.” They even suggested that my previous attempt to book an appointment with them was deceptive—though I still don’t understand what they were implying.

I do, however, understand the frustration. I was the first infrared hot yoga studio in town. Immediately after I opened, many others followed. I never assumed it was done maliciously or anyone was copying me—it was simply the latest trend in the industry, and naturally, others wanted to offer it too. That’s how growth works in any profession.

To be clear: I do not know this person personally, we have never worked together, and we do not do business together. I have supported this person’s various business ventures as a client, but looking back, they have never been a client of mine. I regularly see and support multiple therapists and estheticians in town and frequently refer clients to trusted professionals. Anyone who has worked with me knows I only refer to professionals I have personally seen and trust. Since I only live in Medicine Hat part-time, I often refer clients elsewhere when I am unavailable.

This business owner sent me multiple messages throughout the day, demanding I speak with them to "work this out", filled with accusations, and I am thoroughly baffled as to why they are so focused on me when multiple people in this city offer these modalities.

The issue here is the misconception that any one person “owns” a well-established therapy. Hydrotherapy—including heat and cold applications, infrared, cryotherapy, CoolSculpting (which has been in Medicine Hat for years), and contrast therapy—has been used in therapeutic and rehabilitative practices for centuries. I have personally been offering fire and ice massage for years. Many of you have already experienced these modalities—some of you have even done cold plunges at my house!

This situation has also reinforced something I’ve always believed: Buying an expensive machine does not make someone a skilled therapist. A trained, experienced professional can provide effective therapy with nothing but their hands and knowledge. Machines and devices can support treatment, but they do not replace education, expertise, or proper application.

Be Informed When Seeking Therapy:

✔ Credentials & Certifications – Is the provider qualified in pain science, human anatomy, and therapeutic techniques?

✔ Insurance & Regulation – Are they a registered professional, such as a massage therapist, physiotherapist, chiropractor, or esthetician? If an unregulated provider causes harm, there may be no recourse for compensation or corrective treatment.

This isn’t about drama. When someone feels attacked, it’s natural to want to defend themselves. But more importantly, this is about ensuring that therapy is based on expertise—not just trends. I have been in this industry for 20 years, and my business—Natalee Heals—exists because of my education, experience, and commitment to my clients.

Pain management and therapy are complex fields that even the world’s best doctors continue to study. If healing was as simple as buying a machine, we wouldn’t need doctors or therapists at all.
