Did you know?

The yolk sac is one of the first structures visible during an early pregnancy ultrasound, typically appearing around 5 to 6 weeks gestation. It’s a small, fluid-filled sac that’s attached to the developing embryo (later, the baby) by a stalk. Its primary role is to provide nourishment to the embryo before the placenta is fully formed and able to take over this function. The yolk sac contains vital nutrients and proteins that support the embryo’s rapid growth and development.

As the pregnancy progresses, the yolk sac gradually decreases in size. By around 12 weeks, the placenta has usually taken over the job of providing nutrition, and the yolk sac is no longer needed. It typically disappears completely by the end of the first trimester. The presence of the yolk sac is a positive sign, indicating that the pregnancy is developing as expected in the early stages.
