đź’Ş UNA supports and stands in solidarity with our AUPE - Alberta Union of Provincial Employees co-workers in their fight for fairness and respect. Today, it was announced that Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides and other workers represented by the AUPE voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

Nurses know that health care works best when health care workers stand together. That’s why UNA members are encouraged to wear a “UNA supports our co-workers” button when at work. UNA will soon share information with UNA Locals about how they can order and distribute these buttons to members.

UNA will also be providing information and guidance to UNA Local Executives in the coming days about their responsibilities in the worksite in the event of a strike by AUPE.

Between a government-controlled, limited third-party process, months-long delays, and now the ousting of Alberta's Auditor General in the midst of his investigation, Albertans are STILL waiting for real answers on the serious allegations of corruption in our health care.

A fully empowered public inquiry is the only way Albertans can be assured we'll see real answers as to whether our public health care dollars are being spent in the best interest of patient care, and NOT private profits!

United Nurses of Alberta supports the Alberta Teachers Association and its members in their response to the abhorrent decision by Alberta’s United Conservative Party Government to use the Notwithstanding Clause of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to abrogate their constitutionally guaranteed right to free collective bargaining.

“We absolutely support the teachers and respect the decisions they have and will make,” UNA President Heather Smith told UNA’s Annual General Meeting in Edmonton this morning.

UNA’s leadership will meet and discuss responses appropriate to support and defend the teachers and all working people in Alberta in the face of this unprecedented violation of human rights by Premier Danielle Smith and the UCP government.

At 2 a.m. Tuesday as Albertans slept, the UCP government rammed through a bill ending the province-wide strike by 51,000 public, Catholic and francophone teachers and offensively imposing a four-year collective agreement on the ATA that had been rejected by nearly 90 per cent of its members who were on strike.

The use of the Charter’s section 33, commonly known as the Notwithstanding Clause, is an acknowledgement by the government that it is intentionally violating the fundamental right to free association set out in section 2 of the Charter.

The government had other options to end the strike that would not have violated Charter-protected rights, but chose the “nuclear option,” Smith said.

She said UNA is particularly concerned because the legislation goes further than that typically used in similar situations elsewhere in Canada and because it is the first time the Notwithstanding Clause has been used in Alberta. “This is an incredibly troubling precedent.”

Like UNA members in their recent negotiations for a new collective agreement, Alberta’s teachers were fighting for better working conditions, including class size limits that also protect students and the quality of public education.

UNA and its more than 35,000 members stand in solidarity with Alberta’s teachers and with working Albertans and we will unequivocally oppose politically motivated attacks on workers’ fundamental rights as we have seen from the UCP this week, Smith said.

United Nurses of Alberta’s three-day 2025 Annual General Meeting begins on Tuesday, October 28 in Edmonton. The theme is “Alberta’s Nurses Make It Better.”

Including delegates, observers, staff, and representatives of other unions and organizations, more than 1,000 delegates, staff, guests and observers are expected to attend the event at Edmonton EXPO Centre.

In tomorrow morning's session, delegates will hear reports from UNA President Heather Smith, Secretary-Treasurer Christina Doktor and Labour Relations Director David Harrigan.

Later during the AGM, elections will be held for regional district representatives.

In a closed-door session at the end of the day tomorrow, members will have the opportunity to question the Executive Board about the administration of the union.

On Wednesday, delegates will mainly work on the financial business of UNA. Formal moderated discussions on Wednesday and Thursday will consider issues in public health care and Indigenous health care.

The meeting’s agenda includes a recommitment to the shared journey of reconciliation made at the biennial convention of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions in June. At that meeting, in Niagara Falls, Ont., delegates from nurses’ unions across Canada unanimously adopted the resolution acknowledging the nursing profession’s responsibility for truth, reconciliation and dismantling racism against Indigenous people in health care.

The UNA AGM’s business will conclude at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30.
