My favourite exercise things!
As someone with arthritis in my lower back, I NEED to move otherwise it seizes up. However I don’t like doing the same thing all the time. Also I’m not able to do certain things on certain days but I always make time to do something.
NOTE: People who exercise on a daily basis don’t have time, they make time because it is important.
Here are my favorite things when it comes to exercise.
Exercise bands - These are great for arm exercises and offer quite a bit of resistance. It doesn’t matter if they have handles or not.
Exercise loops - These guys are easy to toss into a suitcase or bag when I am on the road. They give me enough resistance to break a sweat and help me strengthen my body.
Yoga matt - I have tried many different yoga matts and my favorite is the B Matt. One of my pet peeves is when my feet and hands get sweaty and they start to slip. B Matt won’t do that to you.
Yoga blocks - Many yoga poses require you to put your hands to the matt, and my body won’t always allow me to do that so yoga blocks help me to adapt that movement. They are also great for sitting on and propping up knees so that there is less pressure in my lower back.
Yogis to follow - Melanie Emlyn on Insight Timer app and www.doyogawithme.com
Matt pilates - www.doyogawithme.com
Cardio videos - right now my go to is Cdornerfitness on youtube. I loved step aerobics in my teens and twenties and I feel the same about it now. Do a search of youtube for any exercise videos that used to light you up, I’ll bet you will find them, I even found Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda lol. At the very least crank up your favorite tunes and dance around your kitchen.
Daily walks - I get outside most days for a walk. Feeling the fresh air on my face (regardless of the weather) helps me to clear my head. If it is really yucky outside then I have a treadmill that I use instead.
The gym - I love the gym and my gym family. Classes are my favorite as I do best just showing up and letting someone tell me what to do. I modify many of the exercises to support injuries and my arthritis. The 6 am time slot is my favorite although most instructors laugh at me because I'm still yawning 20 minutes in. I do love the feeling of getting it out of the way and it allows time for a walk later in the day.
Resistance Training: I have a set of 5, 8 and 10 pound weights that I use and I also have a 25 pound kettlebell. What I have found with my body is I need more strength in my muscles to keep my joints and ligaments in place.
What do you like to do?
