This is Yeti. Take a good look.
Born with no external genitalia (tiny vaginal opening and no udder) and 100% albino.
How does this happen in beef cattle?
Recessive inheritance: For a calf to be born albino, both parents must be carriers of the recessive gene, even if they show normal pigmentation themselves. When two carriers breed, there is a one-in-four chance that their offspring will inherit two copies of the recessive gene and be albino.
She is blind, with perhaps the exception of seeing shadows. We call her a “she” because she does exhibit more female mannerisms like being in heat. Her other albino trait is that she is pure white. While Shorthorns can appear to be pure white, they DO have tiny bits of red in their ears or freckles that appear in the undercoat when wet. Yeti has none of this coloring.
It is said this happens with 1 out of every 100,000 live calf births. I guess you could do the math and say my dad has calved a lot of cows, because this is the first in his 50+ years of calving cows.
Yeti was weaned off her mama in the fall of 2024 and has been on grass and feed since. In spite of her blindness, she weaned off at a very healthy weight and did exceptionally well in the weaning pen as she transitioned to a full ration.
The kids and I brought her home early this spring, with the 4-H animals and she will butcher in a few days. This is the BEST outcome for her, as she has lived a very low stress life. She will feed our ranch families over the next year. She has served a wonderful purpose, and we are grateful.
Because she is albino, we decided to DNA test her dam and sire. We learned that they both carried the recessive gene. Because of that, we made the decision to remove them from our herd, and they both entered the food chain.
So there you have it. Just one of the very unique and stressful parts to ranching.
As you can see, her eyes are creepy. Other than that she has a fine attitude and is eating well with her companions. It’s pretty remarkable, actually.
Remarkable, but I won’t be sorry if I never see it happen again. 😉
