Mental strength isn’t about suppressing what you feel — it’s about facing it, understanding it, and working through it.

I support individuals in building resilience, managing stress, healing from trauma, and strengthening their minds the same way they train their bodies.

We can’t control everything that happens to us.
But we can control how we respond, how we show up, and what we do next.

A growth mindset starts when we shift our focus from what’s outside our control…
to what’s within it.

Here are six practical ways to build a growth mindset.

One question that comes up a lot — sometimes out loud, sometimes quietly — sounds like this:

ā€œIt feels like things just never change for me. Like good things don’t happen to me. I feel stuck and hopeless.ā€

If you’ve ever had that thought, you’re not alone.
And it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.

In this AMA, I’m talking about why so many people end up waiting for happiness to arrive after life changes — and what the research actually shows instead.

We’ll look at how happiness isn’t usually the reward at the end of the road, but something that often has to come first — through small, intentional actions that build momentum over time.

No toxic positivity.
No ā€œjust be gratefulā€ advice.
Just a more realistic way of understanding how change actually starts.

Let’s talk about it.

Small, consistent choices shape how we show up — not just our outcomes.

This was inspired by a recent Ask Me Anything question about setting big goals, falling short, and feeling worn down when progress is hard to see.

"Every year I set big goals for myself, and every year I end up feeling like I fall short. I look at other people and it seems like they’re succeeding while I’m stuck starting over again. After a while, it just gets exhausting. How do you stay motivated when progress feels slow or invisible?"

When we overthink or overfeel, it’s easy to get stuck. Learning to find that middle ground helps us focus on what we can control and move forward with clarity and calm. 🤟

Wise Mind. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), there’s a concept that can truly shift how we navigate life: the three states of mind, Emotional Mind, Rational Mind, and Wise Mind. These aren’t just abstract ideas; they reflect how we operate in everyday situations, especially under stress or emotional turmoil.

The Emotional Mind is driven entirely by feelings, intense, reactive, and often impulsive. When you’re in this state, your decisions are based on emotions like fear, anger, sadness, or excitement. For example, you might cancel a doctor’s appointment out of anxiety, lash out during a disagreement, or isolate yourself because you feel overwhelmed.

Then there’s the Rational Mind, where logic, facts, and reason dominate. It’s calm, calculated, and emotionally detached. You might analyze health data, over-research every symptom, or follow strict routines, but in doing so, you might ignore your emotional needs, leaving you feeling empty or disconnected.

DBT : Wise Mind.
Wise Mind is the balance between the two. It’s where intuition meets logic. It allows you to acknowledge your feelings without letting them control you, while also using reason without silencing your inner truth.

In Wise Mind, you might recognise your stress and choose to rest, reach out for support, or make a grounded decision about your health. It’s the part of you that pauses, reflects, and says, ā€œThis feels right and makes sense.ā€

In terms of health and well-being, operating from Wise Mind can transform how we care for ourselves. Instead of reacting emotionally or suppressing our emotions through pure logic, we begin to make choices that are compassionate, sustainable, and grounded. We become better at managing stress, setting boundaries, caring for our mental and physical health, and honoring our true needs.

Practicing Wise Mind isn’t about being perfect, it’s about checking in with yourself and choosing a middle path.

Over time, this practice builds emotional resilience, supports healing, and nurtures a sense of calm clarity, even in the midst of life’s chaos.

It's not just a therapy tool, it's a life skill.

HALO knows that caring for others starts with caring for ourselves and each other. The work HALO’s crews do can be incredibly rewarding—but also deeply challenging.

I’m grateful to be part of an organization that values mental health and has a strong Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team supporting its people after difficult calls. Their commitment to peer support and resilience makes all the difference.

At HALO, we know that caring for others begins with caring for ourselves and each other. The work our crews and staff do can be incredibly rewarding but also deeply challenging.

That’s why HALO has a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team, a volunteer-based group dedicated to supporting our people after high-stress or emotionally difficult missions. These trained volunteers provide confidential peer support, helping individuals process tough experiences, maintain their mental well-being, and protect the resilience that keeps them mission-ready.

We’re proud of the HALO CISM Team and grateful for the vital role they play in ensuring our crew can continue focusing on what matters most...delivering lifesaving care to the people of Southern Alberta.

šŸ’š Today, and every day, let’s continue to talk about mental health, support one another, and recognize the strength it takes to reach out.
