Yeeees! Boundaries are a beautiful thing! We have the right and need to set them for ourselves….they are not selfish! 🌱

Most people think boundaries are about building walls or shutting people out. But healthy boundaries sound nothing like that.

They sound like "I'm not available to talk right now, can we reconnect tomorrow?" They sound like "I need to think about that before I give you an answer." They sound like "I can help with this but I can't take that on right now."

Boundaries aren't ultimatums. They're honest communication about what you need and what you're able to give. They protect the relationship as much as they protect you.

And when someone receives them well, that tells you something important about whether this relationship is safe.

It can be difficult to release these ā€œjobsā€ when you have been doing them for so long. And the first time you try to pull away, you may have feelings of anxiety and guilt arise, especially because others who are used to you doing these jobs may not take well to you stopping. People’s negative reactions are not about you doing anything wrong. Trying to be and do everything for everyone leads to exhaustion - we have the right to set healthy boundaries!

If you relate to this and would like to learn how to also take care of yourself and say no, please you visit laura-leebishoptherapy.janeapp.com 🌱

When we are in a state of survival, our priority is safety. Sometimes that means we make choices or say things that are not in accordance with who we really are, and we end up hurting ourselves or others. Those mistakes may have consequences and it is important to take accountability for our actions. However, there is also grace that needs to be extended here. We were doing our best to survive, and it is okay to forgive ourselves for those mistakes.

If you want to learn more about how to start forgiving yourself and what it really means to accept your past, you are invited to reach out for a free 15 minute phone call:

There are many ways this can show up in your relationships. Here’s a little story of one of these ways:

Let’s equate the kindness, love, acceptance, and grace that you can give to yourself and others to money. Perhaps at this point in your journey, you’re struggling to have a good relationship with yourself. You’d consider your self-talk very negative, when you mess up you get mad at yourself, and you constantly feel like you’re not good enough. It’s rare that you say or do anything that is kind or loving for yourself. In this case, you’re giving yourself pennies.

Then a new person comes into your life and starts giving you dimes. That’s going to seem like a huge leap from pennies!! Ten times more worth of kindness and love than you’ve seen before? That would seem incredible!! You would feel like you are getting so much. But ultimately, dimes still aren’t worth very much.

Let’s switch it around. Perhaps at this point in your journey, you have an amazing relationship with yourself. You have grace for yourself when you’re having a hard day, encourage yourself with positive affirmations and completely accept yourself for who you are. You are giving yourself 100 dollar bills.

Then a new person comes into your life and starts giving you dimes. You’re probably going to realize right away that dimes aren’t even close to the 100 dollar bills that you give yourself! How could they think that you’re only worth giving dimes to? You know you’re worth and you are worth the 100 dollar bills!! You likely wouldn’t keep that person around very long if all they ever gave you was dimes.

When you know your worth and have a strong, loving relationship with yourself, it is easier to recognize when others aren’t treating you well; and you can, instead, choose to surround yourself with people who love and cherish you the way you deserve.
