2024 was a challenging year while navigating personal health challenges and a couple big family accidents. It forced the step away from outside horses and abruptly halted my business growth with equine bodywork. I held faith that this beautiful business would still be here when the time was meant to start breathing life back into business.

In all that time between here and there I've been trying to put aside time to learn another art, in the esthetics of pastels. Check out my sister page, Heart In Hand Artwork to follow a new journey of the last few months of pastels. Commissions opening to public soon โœจ๏ธโค๏ธ

Horses have long been recognized as majestic and powerful creatures. However, beneath their beauty lies a fascinating social nature. Horses are not solitary beings but rather social animals that rely on companionship for their wellbeing. In this post, we will explore the importance of horses having other horses for companionship and the positive impact it has on their lives.

Horses are prey animals that have evolved to live in herds. Being part of a herd provides them with a sense of safety and security. In the wild, horses rely on one another to watch out for potential predators. They communicate through various means, such as body language and vocalizations, to alert the herd of any danger. This strong social bond allows horses to thrive in their natural environment.

Just like humans, horses need social interactions for their mental and emotional health. Being alone for extended periods of time can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression in horses. It is crucial to understand that keeping a single horse isolated can have serious negative effects on their overall wellbeing.

Emotional Support: Horses form strong emotional bonds with each other, providing comfort and support. They engage in mutual grooming, nuzzling, and play, which helps reduce stress and promotes overall happiness.

Learning and Development: Horses learn important life skills from each other through observation and interaction. They mimic behaviors and learn from the experiences of their herd mates, improving their own understanding of their environment.

Exercise and Stimulation: Having other horses around encourages physical activity and mental stimulation. They engage in playful behavior, such as chasing and running, which helps keep them active and entertained.
Communication Skills: Being in a herd allows horses to develop and refine their communication skills. They use body language, vocalizations, and facial expressions to convey messages, establish hierarchies, and maintain social bonds.

Companionship with other horses also plays a crucial role in horse-human relationships. Horses that have regular social interactions with their own kind tend to be more confident and well-adjusted when interacting with humans. They have a better understanding of boundaries, trust, and respect.

For horse owners, it is important to ensure that horses have the opportunity to socialize with other horses. Here are a few ways to provide companionship for horses:

โ€ข Pasture Turnout: Allow horses to spend time together in a pasture. This allows them to interact, engage in natural behaviors, and form social bonds.

Companion Horses: If you have a single horse, consider getting another horse as a companion. Ensure compatibility between the horses by observing their interactions before introducing them.

Stable Environment: Arrange stables in a way that horses can see and interact with each other. This can be done through the use of stalls with open fronts or shared paddocks.
Horse Clubs or Facilities: Consider joining a horse club or utilizing horse facilities that provide opportunities for horses to interact with other horses. This allows them to participate in group activities and events.

Horses are social animals that require companionship for their overall wellbeing. By understanding their natural instincts and providing opportunities for social interactions, we can ensure that horses lead fulfilling lives. Whether it is within a herd or through horse-human relationships, the presence of other horses in their lives plays a vital role. As responsible horse owners, it is our duty to provide them with the companionship they need to thrive.

Heart In Hand Equine Specialty is a company that has a very gentle approach to our horse's holistic wellness. With a focus on myofascial support, the craniosacral system, and global structural tension, Heart In Hand Equine Therapy offers accredited professional equine therapy as well as other services such as holistic equine nutrition consults and individualized ground work lessons.

Myofascial release is a technique that involves applying gentle pressure to the connective tissue surrounding muscles and organs in the body. This can help to release tension and improve the overall function of the body. The therapist at Heart In Hand Equine Specialty is trained in this technique and use it to address issues such as muscle pain, stiffness, and loss of range of motion in horses. By releasing tension in the fascia, horses can experience improved movement and greater comfort in their bodies.

The craniosacral system is another important aspect of equine therapy offered by Heart In Hand. This system includes the bones of the skull, the spine, and the sacrum. By gently manipulating these bones and releasing any restrictions, the therapist can help to improve the overall health and well-being of the horse. This can be especially beneficial for horses that have experienced trauma or have chronic pain.

In addition to these techniques, Heart In Hand also focuses on addressing global structural tension in horses. This refers to the tension and imbalances that can occur throughout the entire body due to various factors such as conformation, injuries, and compensational patterns. By identifying and addressing these issues, we can help horses achieve better overall balance and movement.

Along with their equine therapy services, Heart In Hand also offers holistic equine nutrition consults. Just like humans, the food we eat can have a significant impact on our health and well-being. The same goes for horses. By providing clean and whole nutrition, Heart In Hand can support the horse's body and promote optimal health. We offer customized nutrition programs to meet each horse's individual needs.

Apart from equine therapy and nutrition, Heart In Hand also offers individualized ground work lessons. Ground work involves working with the horse and owner from the ground, without riding. This can help to strengthen the horse's body, improve their self-carriage, and address any poor compensational patterns. It is also a vital part of a horse's training and can help to establish a strong foundation for future riding.

At Heart In Hand Equine Specialty, the focus is not just on addressing physical issues but also on promoting the horse's overall well-being. This includes addressing emotional and mental aspects as well. By taking a holistic approach to equine therapy, Chantel Paterson can help horses achieve optimal health and happiness.

๐™๐™ค๐™ง๐™–๐™œ๐™š:

At this point, I believe the only part that the equine industry can agree on is that horses are herbivores. From this, we see millions of complex differing opinions of how the horse should be fed and yet there is this epidemic of health conditions dictated entirely on the horse's digestion. The equine industry is flooded with: โฌ‡๏ธ
โ€ข colic being one of the leading causes of death
โ€ข ulcer cases, ulcers everywhere
EMS, IR, PSSM, PPID at an all time high
โ€ข laminitis and founder as another leading cause of deaths
โ€ข symptom profiles that do not fit standard diagnoses
โ€ข global inflammation resulting in tissue deterioration and early retirement

It's gotten to the point that I see most people just discouraged and lost, left standing in the hay barn wondering why hay isn't just hay and why horse's can't tolerate grass. The worst part is that owners becomes so defeated and stressed that they will unconsciously turn their horse's diets off the radar, even though the problems still persist. Hey, I'm the first to admit, I've been there! You're absolutely not alone.

โžก๏ธ "Hay is hard to source. It's all I got."
โžก๏ธ "I have no control of what my horse eats because of the boarding arrangements"
โžก๏ธ "I'm doing the best I can by giving grain once/twice daily full of many reputable commercialized products to support my horse for any missing nutrients not found in their hay"
โžก๏ธ "Each buckets costs more than what my family eats in a day" ๐’๐’“ "I don't have all that extra money for supplements"
โžก๏ธ "It doesn't matter what I do, I'm apparently wrong."

What if we could simplify "forage" into something less intimidating and stressful? Here are a few of my perspectives:

๐ŸŒพ Fiber is a horse's best friend. 65% of the digestive system consists of the hind gut that generates 75% of the horse's energy through fermentation of fiber.

๐ŸŒพ Horse's get protein from plants. Protein is broke down in the stomach and absorbed through the small intense. The stomach is only about 10% of the horse's whole digestive system. If the diet is too high in protein, undigested protein ends up in the hind gut where it is fermented, creating ammonia and toxicity of the hind gut and entire body system.

๐ŸŒพ Our horse's don't have gallbladders so their ability to break down fats solely relies on liver. The liver has over 500 functions including supporting digestion. To say it's easy to overwhelm the liver is an understatement...

๐ŸŒพ Keep things simple. When in doubt - turn to plants! Plants are almost always 100% absorbable and recognized in the horseโ€™s body. In the wild, if the horse is struggling, they will seek out specific plants to support the imbalance in the body. Most domestic horse's unfortunately don't have this opportunity as they only have access to whichever paddock/field they live in. Hay and/or pasture grass only diets unfortunately do not meet a horse's nutritional requirements.

Processed foods don't make you feel very good causing the entire system to become sluggish. Imagine how your horse feels if they are metabolizing lots of commercialized ingredients...

Here is a list of ๐’‡๐’“๐’†๐’† things horse owner's can do to support their horse's diets:

๐ŸŒฟ Listen to your horse. What is it that they are presenting to you that doesn't feel right? Is there a symptom profile? Is there something you see? Is there only one or two strange symptoms? Learn your horse so that when there is the slightest change, you know exactly what to record.

๐ŸŒฟ Read the ingredient labels of everything you feed. Don't know what an ingredient is - use Google! How many ingredients are you cringing at? How processed in the commercial feeds? More processed = more ingredients. More ingredients = more metabolic demand.

๐ŸŒฟ Instead of investing hours reading up a specific brand of supplements, shift your energy into learning the anatomy of the horse's digestion system. This potent tool will save copious amounts of time sifting through commercialized products because you'll know what nutrients get digested where and how your horse's daily ingestion of food is utilized.

๐ŸŒฟ Learn about different grasses and hay, less about commercialized supplements. As a small challenge, can you create a simple forage only diet using ONLY plants and organic vitamins/minerals?

๐™๐™ง๐™š๐™š๐™™๐™ค๐™ข

Freedom is more than the stall, paddock or field your horse lives in. There, I said it ๐Ÿซฃ

I believe each horse needs to have the freedom of adequate physical movement but also they need to have the freedom to have opinions and make choices without fear of negative consequences. I believe horse's are more than intelligent enough to be taught the difference between right and wrong without using fear and force, later allowing them the freedom of choice and opinion. Situational awareness always in mind of course. If you're evacuating a wildfire zone, it's probably not the time to listen to the "no" your horse is giving you. This example has the importance of life and death. Performing a simple day to day task however should facilitate an environment where your horse can safely share an opinion and be heard.

I am also a big advocate for movement. The physical movement your horse ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด rarely is met when just being turned out even in the perfect "paddock paradise." Horses thrive on movement. The anatomy of the horse needs movement. Our domestic horses will never see the movement of wild horses, but we can definitely help facilitate increased movement by sharing a 15-60 minute hand walk, ground work play, riding, driving, etc. Unless rehabbing a severe stall rest induced injury - all our horses benefit with shared movement with us. One does not need to feel pressured to ride because riding is just one of many forms of exercise we can provide our horses.

A person is able to integrate the 3 F's into their facility: freedom, forage, and friends. However, the most vital part of freedom starts with us, their human.

Most boarding facilities may not have a pasture paradise. Instead, there is a generous paddock, shared fencelines and good quality hay. Sound familiar? While the facility is out of your control on set up, etc - you still have power and control to give your horse the freedom they need. Perhaps it looks like more regular trips out of the paddock, daily adventures out and about on hand walks, learning new ground training skills, maybe you enjoy riding, maybe it's cart driving. It's in these moments where we also get to practice making a safe space for our horses to make choices of their own and have opinions.

The important messages here is that your horse needs YOU to be apart of the 3 F's and it truly starts with freedom which nourishes your friendship and creates the path of a healthy relationship and lifestyle for your horse ๐Ÿงก
