Happy International Women’s day to all the strong, confident, smart, beautiful, talented women in my life. Thank you for standing by me and for supporting me through all my wild ideas (“quit my job and go private!!”) and just for being there behind the scenes too.

On this international women’s day, I’m reminded of something my doctor told me: “Women can have it all, just not at the same time” and that just really helped me put everything in perspective. One step at a time and you’ll always feel successful.

This is so important to note!! AAC is never a replacement for a person’s voice, it is there to augment how they communicate!

When I worked in the school I always talked about “model model model”! Now, when I work with my kiddos who have complex communication needs, I’ve got a core board in my hand and I’m going as quickly as I can across that core page trying to point to as many words as I can as I speak. This is a classic example of practicing what I preach! For that 30-45 minutes that communication partner is seeing that even though Ms Sarah CAN use her words, she’s also pointing to the pictures. And with just a core word page, I am able to put together 3,4,5+ words!

When I started Little Nugget my goal was to help out where I saw a growing need for services. As she grew into an actual private practice I decided that I really didn’t want this to be about me making my millions (although an income is greatly missed!!)
I wanted to measure my success based on how happy my kids were, how present I could be for them, and how I could find a balance doing what I loved - being a present mom and being able to practice speech language pathology the way I envisioned it should look.
So far, it’s looking good. And that makes me feel successful.
