Roseita M. Corbett Counselling

Roseita M. Corbett Counselling Anxiety, Depression, Family Dynamics, Transgender support and Hormone readiness assessments I consider “counselling” a calling.

I was born and raised in a small fishing town in Newfoundland and the third born of 7 children. Our parents taught us the value of hard work, the importance of giving to others and most important of all, (in my mind), that family relationships- those you are born into and those you choose along the way- are essential to shaping who we become. It wasn’t until I was an adult, married with 3 children, and reunited with my family through the loss of a sibling and both of our parents that I realized how strong and resilient we are as a unit. I graduated from Memorial University with my BE.d in the fall of 1994 and travelled to British Columbia where I began my first teaching job at the BC Muslim School for two years. We moved back to Nova Scotia in the summer of 1997; the same year I got married. I have been working as an Elementary Teacher with the HRSB since1998, teaching all grades Primary through grade 6. In 2010, I began my masters in counselling through Acadia and graduated in the fall of 2013. As an educator, I have always worked hard to develop a good rapport with my students and their families. As a counsellor, I value these family connections even more as they are an important layer to the “big picture” of understanding a child’s (clients) story and with building a trusting, genuine therapeutic relationship. I have never been more humbled than I am when I sit with someone and am fortunate enough to be trusted to share in the confidence of their “life story” and the challenges or struggles they are dealing with. It takes courage and strength to share it and in return, I promise you the gift of empathy and reflection as we sit together and move forward together, seeking a balance and/or change that help you, your child and family move forward with a new perspective and alternatively, acceptance.

Transgender awareness week starts November 13-19 followed by Transgender Day Of Remembrance which is observed on November 20 to commemorate those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence. These are humans who died for who they are 😔

Two thirds of transgender folks have considered or have attempted suicide...Nova Scotia has the highest rate per capita of folks who identify as gender diverse (transgender/nonbinary)...

Please take a moment to remember the 31 transgender and gender non-conforming people lost to violence so far this year.

Important infographic to share and then further brainstorm with students.

*please note that the brainstorm list may look very different for your students. What our neurodivergent or students who have experienced trauma, for example, can and can’t control may look ok very different.

On the last day of Pride Month, we are reminded that our work on combating LGBTQ2IA/2SLGBTQIA hate, violence, discrimination, and harassment continues every day.
The decision of the Supreme Court of the United States is an attack on the human rights of a significant number of the population.

Last week, Elliot Page released the first touching chapter of his memoir 'Pageboy' reports Them.

Although his life as a trans celebrity is markedly different from the lives of most trans people, Page continued, he still believes that representation matters. “I think it's crucial, I think we need to feel represented and see ourselves, you know, that's not something I had, like, as a kid,” he explained.

Love is love. A mother's love knows no judgment. As a mother, I stand in total solidarity with my children as they move forward in the universe as their authentic selves with their own minds and bodies and ideas.
On this trans visibility day my daughter and I are visible.
