After 3 decades I finally did it! I finally broke up with Bell (for my landline) after all the the promises they’ve made. All the excuses. All the bundles. As of tomorrow, my number is now 905 699 8221. Please, know that I’m still here but I’m using my mobile phone exclusively.

It is final! After a long election and second election process, the result has just been announced. Dr. Elayne Tanner has been re-elected as District 4 Social Work Councillor for the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. It is my honour to accept this position for a further 3 years

REMEMBER:
To all my Electoral District 4 Registered Social Workers. This includes the Regional Municipalities of Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth, Niagara, Waterloo and Haldimand-Norfolk, the Counties of Dufferin and Wellington and the County of Brant.
I NEED YOUR SUPPORT
The election that had been run in May, is being re-run because of an irregularity. You should have received an email explaining this. Even though you feel you have voted, and the vote is over; and even though school is out and you are busy doing holiday activities with your children, if you have not voted in the month of July, please take a moment to vote for me again so that I can carry on my role in the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
Your ballot came via email from BIG PULSE and first went out on Monday July 8, 2024. If you did not receive it, an email to the College will fix that. Please VOTE for Dr. Elayne Tanner. My Candidate's Statement is below, and will also be available when you go to vote. Two Registered Social Workers will be elected. Please make your vote count and vote me back in. Please pass this information on to friends who may not see it and will miss the opportunity to vote. Remember, although you may have just voted a month ago, you need to vote again.

Candidate Statement
My name is Dr. Elayne Tanner. I am a registered social worker with a BA in psychology, a BSW, MSW and PhD in social work. Having been a social worker prior to the enactment of legislation, I understand the importance of the College to our profession. Through legislation, College registrants can assure service users that social workers serve the public interest with integrity, competence, and principles of good conduct. Social work legislation has established a code of ethics, educational requirements, and mechanisms for complaints and discipline that provide the public with protection and confidence when using social work services.

I am running for re-election for my second 3-year term on Council. During my first term, I have been actively involved in the undertakings of the College as a member of both Council and Executive and will be attending the Association of Social Work Boards Board Member Training. My wide range of clinical practice, experience, teaching, and supervision along with my commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), provides a unique perspective spanning both, the professional obligation of self-regulation and the protection of public interests. Your vote will enable me to continue to participate in maintaining effective governance with our College.

I posted this a year ago. This summer it is even more true. If you are a parent, relative or friend of a teen, please read and consider.

I want to talk to parents and caregivers of teens. I believe this to be an urgent message. I am a counsellor-psychotherapist. I am a doctor of social work. I meet with teens, preteens, adults and families. I have been doing this for over 30 years. I know what I am talking about.
Summer time is notoriously a time of carefree behaviour for our young people. They end up in more MVAs; more sexual experimentation and more alcohol and drug use. Teens think they are invincible. But this summer, I suspect because of COVID19, it seems to be far worse.

Because of COVID 19, kids have been isolated and away from friends. They are hearing about the anxiety the virus is generating and the the fear families are experiencing because of the floundering economy. They may have experienced death of a family member or friend’s family member. School was largely a lost semester and for sure, even if academics were maintained, friendships and social skills suffered.

They are experiencing anxiety and depression with a fatalistic attitude. And now, suddenly, the stress of school is gone. Summer jobs are largely non existent so there are no responsibilities or obligations and isolation restrictions have been lifted. It is as if they have been locked in solitary confinement and have been suddenly let loose with a renewed velocity. Most teens are new drivers. They have not been able to maintain driving skills as the stores are closed and they are socially distancing. I am hearing of kids speeding; driving drunk; wreckless; spinning out. Rolling the car. Not remembering any of it. It’s as if all the craziness of youth is magnified.

I’m seeing overdoses of hard drugs. Serious car accidents. Indiscriminate sexual activity with no protection against pregnancy or disease and no discretion. Bullying. Discrimination. Racism. It’s all there. It’s as if they no longer feel the certainty of a tomorrow, so they might as well throw caution to the wind today.
Please parents, be aware. Talk directly and bluntly to your kids. Don’t let them have more freedom because it’s summertime—they don’t know how to handle it. Give them firm guidelines and boundaries and consequences. Keep them close. It’s not easy being a parent, especially of teens but this year, it appears to be especially difficult. Don’t be your kids’ friend. Your job is to guide and protect. If they could already be adults, they wouldn’t need you. Remember that they are still children and don’t give them more freedom than they can manage.

I am proud to post this letter I received yesterday. Not uncommon but always welcome.

Hi Elayne,

On this day of BellLetsTalk - I wanted to thank you for all you have done for me over the years to help me through the worst
and darkest days of depression and happily through the better times!
The help with many other things like lawyers, mortgage brokers and more contacts has also allowed me to move forward out of difficult and uncomfortable times.

YOU have made a difference and kept me going and changed my life - I can never thank you enough Emoji
