You do not have to own Lululemon. You do not have to be young. You do not have to look good. Yoga is for the WILLING. Yoga is for feeling good inside your skin. Yoga is for taking care of yourself. Beyond that, nothing else matters! When you come to Yoga Magnificat, expect imperfectly perfect people of all shapes and sizes doing what feels good to them. You can expect detailed and experienced instruction to help you get the most out of your class for your body's ability. It may look clumsy and not all that graceful, but that is OKAY. Yoga is not about how you look when you're doing it. My aim is to help my students gain strength and freedom of movement gradually and naturally, movement that provides benefits to real life and atheletic pursuits. And while yoga should feel good, I know that we all carry physical baggage that makes us repeat unhelpful habitual movements, even as we do yoga. As such, I rely heavily on yoga anatomy, body mechanics, and adapted forms of physical activity for special populations to inform my teaching. Need help selecting a class that's right for you? Yoga with Matthea Schumpelt

Yoga is for everyone! A common misconception is that yoga is only for thin, young, ultra-bendy females. The truth is: Yoga is for every shape, size, gender and age. It is not the flexible who can do yoga; it is the WILLING. At Yoga Magnificat, I offer classes for seniors, beginners and intermediate students. In EVERY class, I strive to present multiple layers of each pose to meet you where you are.

My yoga classes all take place at Douglastown Community Church (302 Big Ferry Rd). I offer yoga classes in TWO formats: 1) 8-Week Sessions and 2) Daytime Drop-Ins.


  • 8-Week Sessions (Evenings): Yoga Elements, Yoga Bliss, Yoga Burn
  • I believe that offering yoga in sessions is the best way to help students experience the benefits of yoga through commitment of practice! Rarely do we “get” something new by doing it once; we have to return a number of times to improve mind-body-breath connection. This takes time, but don’t worry. We will approach learning with a sense of fun and exploration - together! Registration is strongly recommended, as knowing who will be in my class will help me better tailor a session to my students’ needs.
