How to Prepare for Ecstatic Dance
Ecstatic dance isn’t about looking good or performing, it’s about feeling, expressing, and freeing yourself through movement. Whether it’s your first time or you’re returning to the floor, here’s how to prepare for the experience:
✨ 1. Set an Intention
Before you go, take a moment to ask yourself:
— What do I want to explore or release?
— How do I want to feel afterward?
✨ 2. Wear Comfortable Clothes
Think: loose, breathable, easy to move in. Most people dance barefoot, but grippy socks or soft shoes are okay too.
✨ 3. Hydrate & Eat Lightly
Drink water beforehand and bring a water bottle. A light meal 1–2 hours before is ideal, enough to fuel you without weighing you down.
✨ 4. Arrive Early
Give yourself time to settle in. Starting with grounding or intention-setting. Arriving early helps you land in your body and the space.
✨ 5. Know the Basics
— No talking on the dance floor
— No alcohol or substances
— Respect everyone’s space and boundaries
✨ 6. Warm Up
Stretch, shake, breathe, sway. Let your body start to loosen before the music builds.
✨ 7. Let Go of Judgment
There’s no right or wrong way to move. Close your eyes if it helps. You’re not performing, you’re exploring.
✨ 8. Feel It All
Joy, grief, playfulness, anger, ecstasy, it’s all welcome. Let your body express what words can’t.
✨ 9. Integrate Afterward
Give yourself time to rest. Journal, stretch, drink water, or simply notice how you feel. This is part of the dance, too.
✨ 10. Things to Bring:
🌀 Water bottle
🌀 Yoga mat
🌀 Blanket
🌀 pillow
Ecstatic dance is a journey into your body, your emotions, and the present moment. There’s no wrong way to do it. Just show up, be present, and let the music move you.
