Tired of getting your teeth cleaned so often at the periodontist? There is a good reason for it! This is a case of severe implant infection that was treated non-surgically, with just regular deep cleanings and excellent home oral hygiene. Good dental cleanings and good home hygiene for the win! We may not have LANAP, but we do have LAMWATT.

Black triangles between teeth are also known as papilla loss. This can be because of the tooth shape, gum loss or bone loss. Why not just grow some gum to fill the black triangle? The challenge in grafting these areas is that there is not much bone to support the grafted gum and there is not enough blood supply to feed the graft. Gum surgery to grow back a lost papilla is therefore unpredictable. More predictable options to correct black triangles include orthodontic treatment or restorative work (fillings/veneers/crowns), by changing the shape of the tooth and mask the black triangle.

Beyond cavities, what does your mouth tell us? Changes in the texture, colour, size of oral tissue can alert us to illness in our body. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia and oral signs and symptoms include glossitis (swollen smooth red tongue), angular cheilitis (cracked corners of the mouth), recurrent oral ulcers, oral candidiasis (yeast infection), pale oral tissue and so on. With anemia, it’s also common to have weakness and fatigue, but with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia, there may also be neurologic signs like tingling sensation, dizziness, and more! Nutritional deficiencies can come from a simple change in diet or from malabsorption. Our oral health care professionals routinely screen for oral cancers but also for any suspicious changes in the soft tissue that may clue us on underlying health issues.

Gum grafting to prep the future implant site! Studies show that you don’t always need thick gum tissue around a dental implant. But from experience, Dr. Lam Watt and Dr. Hsu know that nice healthy thick gum definitely makes it less sensitive and easier for you to clean your dental implant. And we all know, cleaning your dental implant keeps it healthy and for a long time!

Nothing about puffy gums says “healthy”!
Gum swelling is usually a sign there is an infection. But did you know some meds can also cause gums to overgrow? Common heart medications like amlodipine can cause varying degree of drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO). Plaque is still the main villain! You can’t always change your meds, but plaque removal can make a huge improvement. The Key is: Good daily brush and floss technique, regular dental check-ups and regular professional dental cleanings. Dr. Lam Watt and Dr. Hsu routinely remove excess gum for aesthetics and more importantly, easier home oral hygiene. But if you are still on those culprit meds, the tissue may grow again and bounce back. Some other meds guilty of causing DIGO include immunosuppressants and anticonvulsants!

Don’t wait too long for your gum graft surgery, especially if it’s on the tongue side!
Lingual gum grafts have good success rates, but it's harder to achieve predictable results. Dr. Lam Watt managed to get good access for the surgery, while maneuvering around dangerous anatomical structures to like the lingual artery and salivary ducts. Getting good stability is key and the challenge with lingual gum grafts is securing it well enough that even the tongue muscle won't interfere!

It’s not easy to grow back bone around teeth. Sometimes, we find these natural grooves on teeth and they can cause bone loss very quickly. After removing this big chunk of calculus, Dr. Hsu also removed the groove and grafted bone around. We are loving the result, keeping teeth healthy and for a long time!

Did you know that not enough vitamin C can cause gum disease? Vitamin C plays an important role in collagen production, a basic structural component for pretty much everything in our body. When that’s affected, you get bleeding sores, tooth loss, poor wound healing, etc. Orange is a classic go-to for vitamin C, but don’t underestimate these other sources: bell peppers, kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, papaya, strawberry, kiwi. Keep a well-balanced diet and a healthy mouth! We think Monkey read our post and knows those strawberries are full of vitamin C. 🎵HookSounds Repost
