Such a wonderful afternoon spent with 150+ SLPs & SLTAs discussing ways the we can make regulation the norm in all of our sessions

Here’s to taking steps towards becoming more neurodivergent-affirming in our practices by being intentional about developing our own attitudinal & emotional competence while recognizing our clients’ full humanity

Thrilled to be able to present our work from our & partnership with support from the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) in Prague at

The development of evidence-based (read- completion of a modified Delphi Study co-created with the Autistic community) of Autism Occupational Therapy Guiding is a key step in supporting our profession to deliver neurodivergent-affirming care.

A huge thank you to all of our participants (Autistic people, parents of Autistic children, OTs working in different sectors of the field & SLP researchers) for all of your work & support of this project ❤️

Excited to spend 3 days learning (& sharing) the latest autism insights to support OT clinical practice

Super interesting first panel of past INSAR presidents & how the autism research field has evolved

Some key evolution trends:

Consensus that autistic people are born autistic. Autism onset is prenatal. By 6 months, there are brain differences that signal autism

Heterogeneity of autism- complex condition, not just one autism, there are many “autisms” need to adopt a precision medicine approach & further study co-occurring conditions ➡️need to understand what works best for whom & when

We now adopt a balanced view of autism- research focuses on challenges AND strengths and research aims to bridge neurodiversity with the medical model

Implications of the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria: eliminated different subgroups & the importance of adding sensory reactivity

All research should be co-designed with the autistic community, period.

Autistic people’s human rights have been overlooked. Autistic people have the right to work, education, dignity & protection like any other group

Recognition of intersectionality. We all have different identities including race & gender identities

Emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration & bidirectional relationship between researchers and clinicians. Research needs to have clinical relevance.

Some future trends in autism research are: looking at commonalties between autism and neurodegenerative conditions, more research on autism across the lifespan and the role of AI in autism diagnostics & interventions

Thank you for all of the amazing discussions, sharing of resources & all the ways in which we were able to support one another as we discussed how to BEST* support our non-speaking clients who present with high medical & behavioural complexities.

Always in awe of OTs creativity, willingness to reflect on our practices & take steps towards doing differently.
