We donโ€™t wait for a heart attack to talk about physical health.
So why do we wait for a crisis to talk about mental health?

By age 14, half of all mental health conditions have already begun. Yetโ€ฆ the average child waits 11 years before getting support.

Mental health isnโ€™t something we introduce in emergencies.
Itโ€™s something we build into everyday conversations, at home, in classrooms, and in communities.

โ€ข For parents: Talk about feelings as often as you talk about safety.
โ€ข For educators: The loud child and the quiet one are both asking for help.
โ€ข For leaders: Mental health literacy isnโ€™t extra. Itโ€™s essential.

We donโ€™t need more awareness. We need earlier action.

โ€œShe didnโ€™t act out โ€” she just disappeared into herself.โ€

This is one of the most overlooked mental health patterns in young girls.

Between the ages of 11โ€“14, there is a critical shift:
โ€ข Puberty begins
โ€ข Social pressures intensify
โ€ข Comparison becomes constant

And during this time, rates of depression and anxiety in girls spike sharply.

But many donโ€™t show it in ways we expect.

No disruption.
No acting out.
Just quiet withdrawal.

Because they arenโ€™t seen as โ€œproblems,โ€ their struggles are often missed. We need to move beyond only responding to visible behaviours and start paying attention to what isnโ€™t being said.

Ask the quiet ones how theyโ€™re doing.
Notice the shifts.
Create space for honesty.

Mental health doesnโ€™t always get louder. Sometimes, it disappears.

Poverty is one of the strongest predictors of poor mental health outcomes, and not by coincidence.

Chronic financial stress doesnโ€™t just affect daily life. It impacts brain development, emotional regulation, and how children experience the world around them.

What we often label as:
โ€ข โ€œinattentionโ€
โ€ข โ€œbehaviour issuesโ€
โ€ข โ€œemotional outburstsโ€ can actually be survival responses to ongoing instability.

Living in scarcity can lead to hypervigilance, anxiety, and difficulty focusing, not because a child is unwilling, but because their nervous system is overwhelmed.

If we are serious about supporting children and families, we must move beyond surface-level solutions and address the root causes:
โžก๏ธ Access to stable housing
โžก๏ธ Financial support systems
โžก๏ธ Trauma-informed care
โžก๏ธ Community-based resources

Mental health care must include equity, or it will continue to fall short.

The most impactful environment in a childโ€™s life is often the least talked about.

๐‡๐จ๐ฆ๐ž.

What happens behind closed doors doesnโ€™t stay there.
It shapes how children think, feel, and move through the world.

Experiences like:
โ€ข Chronic conflict
โ€ข Emotional neglect
โ€ข Unpredictable environments can leave lasting imprints on a childโ€™s mental and emotional well-being.

This isnโ€™t about blame. Itโ€™s about awareness.

Because when we treat what happens at home as โ€œprivate,โ€ we risk overlooking what children may be carrying silently.

Support for children starts with support for families.

High-stress homes donโ€™t happen in isolation, and neither do their impacts.

In single-parent or overwhelmed households, the pressure on caregivers can be immense. Elevated stress levels can affect emotional regulation, increase the likelihood of behavioural challenges, and create long-term health impacts for children.

But this isnโ€™t about blaming parents.

When caregivers are stretched beyond capacity, survival often replaces nurturing, not because they donโ€™t care, but because they lack sufficient support.

This creates a ripple effect that impacts the entire household.

If we want to support children, we must also support the people raising them.

Itโ€™s not a lack of love.
Itโ€™s a lack of support.

Did you know that half of all mental health conditions begin by the age of 14?

Not in adulthood.
Not after a major life crisis.
But during childhood and early adolescence.

At the same time, the average delay between the onset of symptoms and receiving treatment is 11 years.

That means many individuals are navigating their most formative years without the support they need.

This isnโ€™t simply a treatment issue; itโ€™s a recognition issue.

We are missing the window where early intervention can make the greatest impact.

If you are a parent, educator, or professional working with youth, you are in a position to make a difference during the most critical period of development.

The question is:

Returning to society after incarceration can come with uncertainty, but no one should have to navigate that transition alone.

Through LifeMap, young Black men are connected to structured support, resources, and practical tools that help them take meaningful steps forward and rebuild with confidence.

We're grateful to OLG, the Ontario Charitable Gaming Association, and Rama Gaming House Mississauga for their support of LifeMap. Because of their support, we're connecting previously incarcerated Black youth and men with the referrals and resources they need to move forward.

When support is present, progress becomes possible.
