Will Therapy Work for Me?
PubMed meta-analyses show CBT’s long-term superiority for anxiety, with Hedges’ g from 0.32 to 2.41 across anxiety types and better outcomes than medication at 6–12+ month follow-ups. Unlike SSRIs, which often see relapse after stopping, CBT builds skills that lead to lasting gains and relapse rates under 15%. Aks Counselling and Psychotherapy Services in Mississauga offers evidence-based CBT, in-person or virtually across Ontario, following NICE guidance. Culturally adapted CBT improves engagement and outcomes for South Asian and Muslim clients, per 2026 studies addressing family dynamics and stigma. A PMC case report found motor vehicle accident survivors achieved 67% PTSD/anxiety recovery (Cohen’s d = 1.61) with CBT, with emotion regulation as a key mechanism. If anxiety feels overwhelming, CBT offers proven hope—personalized sessions at Aks can increase success. Consult a professional to begin. Approximately 75% of people experience significant symptom relief and better daily functioning from psychotherapy, per the APA.

CBT is a goal-oriented, practical form of talk therapy linking thoughts, feelings, and behaviours; changing unhelpful thoughts leads to healthier emotions and actions by identifying and challenging distorted thinking.

CBT effectively treats many concerns, including depression and low mood; generalized, panic, and social anxiety; OCD; PTSD and trauma-related issues; specific phobias and panic attacks; insomnia and sleep problems; eating concerns (e.g., binge-eating, bulimia) as part of a comprehensive plan; anger management and stress; chronic pain and medical adjustment; and mild to moderate substance use challenges (often with other supports).

Practical details:
- sessions typically last 50–60 minutes, often weekly, and are usually time-limited (commonly 8–20 sessions) but can be extended
- services available in person in Mississauga and via secure virtual sessions
- suitable for adults and adolescents, with adaptations for younger clients

PTSD vs CPTSD — Key Differences in Trauma and Healing

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) typically follows a single, life-threatening or shocking event (combat, natural disaster, serious accident). Symptoms often include intrusive memories or flashbacks, avoidance of reminders, hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, and mood changes. Complex PTSD (CPTSD), recognised in ICD-11, arises after prolonged, repeated, or interpersonal trauma (chronic child abuse, long-term domestic violence, captivity). In addition to classic PTSD symptoms, CPTSD commonly involves persistent difficulties with emotional regulation, a deeply negative self-concept (feelings of worthlessness or guilt), and ongoing problems in relationships such as distrust, difficulty with intimacy, or repeated unhealthy attachments.

Research estimates PTSD affects several percent of the population globally (WHO estimates around 3.9% lifetime prevalence), while CPTSD is more frequently identified in treatment-seeking or clinical groups exposed to sustained trauma, with studies reporting varied prevalence depending on sample and setting. Healing pathways overlap but often differ in emphasis: PTSD often responds well to trauma-focused therapies like cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure, or EMDR, sometimes combined with medication (SSRIs) to manage symptoms. CPTSD usually requires a phased, longer-term approach emphasizing safety and stabilization, emotion-regulation skills (e.g., DBT strategies), building a coherent self-narrative, attachment- and relational-based therapies, somatic or sensorimotor work, and community or group support. Recovery timelines vary—CPTSD frequently needs extended, integrative treatment to address the complex relational and identity wounds alongside classic trauma symptoms.

The biggest difference between PTSD and CPTSD comes down to the nature of the trauma itself. PTSD often grows out of a single, terrifying event, while CPTSD is usually the result of long-term, repeated trauma—especially in situations where it felt impossible to escape.
