Hygieia, the goddess of health, reminds us to embrace of archetypal quest for wholeness of mind, body and soul and well being. Adorned with a simple garment Hygieia was often represented as youthful, radiant and smiling, attributes that are companions of health. Traditionally she is holding or feeding a serpent, a motif that links her to an ancient tradition of woman healers, herbalists and midwives.
Hygieia represents health as the alignment of body and soul, heart and mind, outer success and inner peace. One at the expense of the other constellates dis-ease in the temperament that may manifest as a physical symptom, mental anguish or emotional pain. Hygieia is the personification of healers and calls us into the inner sanctuary of the soul to enjoy respite. On a divinatory level Hygieia will be chosen when the healing of a situation is imperative. Rational healing is not the only answer. It must be accompanied by attending to the root cause, which ultimately is illness in the soul. In a psychological sense Hygieia is soul of health, the urge to attend to psyche and its needs by nurturing our deeper urges and impulses. Embracing the serpent is then a metaphor for nurturing the dark and mysterious aspects of the soul and attending to the unconscious.
Hygieia in the signs and houses of our chart can indicate gifts of healing and healers wisdom as well as areas where we are prone to illness or imbalance. Hygieia draws our attention to the fluctuation of feelings and moods as there is a strong connection between the way you feel and your own physical and mental health. Out tendency to absorb the atmosphere around us and not express our feelings, especially in the liminal state of being the world is currently in, leaves us weakened and prone to feeling unwell. Hygieia’ s placement can give us clues as to the best ways we can optimize our gifts and gain equilibrium rather than imbalance.
Within us all are things lost and undiscovered that need to be reclaimed. Hygieia urges us towards a spiritual devotion to our mind, body and soul’s wholeness. Through connecting with Hygieia, we discover our dedication to well-being and health, our gifts and natural talents therein, and clues of our soul’s true medicine.
If you aren’t sure where your Hygieia is (or even what that means), I am creating Goddess Reports all weekend as a pay-what-you-will offering. That primary post can be found at the top of my page (SheWhoIs), or DM me for details.
