5 Common myths about Osteopathy

❌ Osteopathy only treats bones

🌿 — In addition to bones, Osteopathy treats muscles, ligaments and connective tissue, addressing the entire musculoskeltal system as well as the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems

❌ Osteopathy is a new science

🌿 — Osteopathy has actually been around since the turn of the 19th century! Founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1874 in Kirksville, Missouri it has surged in popularity the last several decades

❌ Treatment only involves the spine

🌿 — Osteopaths assess and treat the entire body including the spine. The broader goal of treatment is to improve function including systems not directly related to the spine

❌ Addresses only acute injuries

🌿 — Osteopathic treatment serves patients with both acute and chronic injuries, and it can help in the immediate aftermath of an injury as well as long-term issues

❌ Osteopaths employ a cookie cutter method to every issue

🌿— Osteopaths cater to the needs of each individual. Ten people with the same issue but unique needs will be addressed in ten different ways. Assessment, goals and health history are heavily relied upon

🧠 **Concussion & Activity Tolerance: The Overflowing Pail Analogy**

A literal and a favourite analogy here at the clinic…

Imagine your brain as a pail, holding the energy you need to get through your day. For someone with an acute concussion, that pail becomes much smaller. Every task—whether it’s using a smartphone, reading, or working on a computer—adds more to the pail. When it overflows, symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and fatigue intensify. This is the “energy crisis” often talked about in concussion recovery.

After a concussion, the brain’s energy supply is temporarily reduced, making it harder to handle even routine activities. Treatment isn’t just about rest; it’s about finding the right balance of activity and recovery to gradually expand your pail without causing it to overflow.

Physiotherapy is a cornerstone of concussion management, offering a range of therapies. Vestibular rehab helps with dizziness and balance issues, manual therapy alleviates neck pain, exercise therapy is customized to your needs, and visual rehab addresses vision-related symptoms. But recovery doesn’t stop there. Chiropractic care, osteopathy, acupuncture, and other holistic therapies can complement your treatment plan, helping to manage symptoms and enhance overall recovery.

Remember, it’s okay to start small and gradually work your way up. Protect your pail, and with time, your brain will regain its full capacity.

🌿 Why Vestibular Physiotherapy Matters 🌿

Dealing with dizziness, vertigo, or balance issues? Vestibular physiotherapy might help you find your footing again. It’s about retraining your body and brain to work together for better stability and less discomfort.

This therapy can be helpful for those facing inner ear disorders, recovering from a concussion, or noticing age-related balance changes. Let’s get back to feeling steady and confident in our daily lives. 🌟
