Quick question for anyone who's brought a parent home after surgery: How many medications did they come home with?
For many families, the answer is 5-8 different prescriptions—each with different timing, dosing, and side effects to watch for.
Now add pain management, potential complications, and normal pre-existing conditions. It's not just about "taking meds." It's about:
→ Understanding what each one does
→ Recognizing concerning side effects
→ Managing interactions
→ Keeping a schedule when everything feels chaotic
One missed dose at the wrong time can trigger a cascade of problems. This is why planning ahead matters.
Before discharge day, you should have:
✅ A clear medication list with timing
✅ A system for tracking (app, chart, pill organizer)
✅ Contact info for pharmacy and prescribing doctors
✅ Knowledge of what side effects need immediate attention
Recovery doesn't start when they come home. It starts when you prepare for what coming home actually means.
