❄️ Staying active through the long Canadian winter can feel challenging - shorter days, freezing temps, and busy routines make motivation drop. But winter is actually when movement matters most! Regular physical activity boosts sleep, improves energy, supports mental health, and helps combat that seasonal dip in mood many people feel.

Small efforts count: short walks, stretching breaks at home, or quick strength sessions all make a difference. Try exploring new activities like yoga, Pilates, indoor cycling, swimming, or snowshoeing. Moving with a friend or joining a class can build accountability and make exercise more enjoyable.

At The Muscle & Joint Clinic, we encourage our community to stay active in ways that are sustainable and enjoyable through the winter months. Consistency matters more than perfection - keep moving, stay warm, and take care of your body all season long! πŸ’ͺ❄️

πŸ“Š Study: Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS)

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a leading cause of disability and spinal surgery in older adults, yet many patients start with nonsurgical care. This secondary analysis of an RCT examined which patient characteristics were linked to better outcomes. Among 216 adults with LSS, manual therapy plus individualized exercise led to greater improvements in symptoms, function, and walking capacity-especially in younger adults and those with certain baseline conditions. These findings may help personalize nonsurgical LSS care and improve outcomes.

Most health resolutions fail-not from laziness, but because they’re too extreme. Science says simple habits work better πŸ‘‡

βœ”οΈ Cut back on alcohol (even a little helps)
βœ”οΈ Eat more fiber-not magic probiotics
βœ”οΈ Keep breakfast simple + protein-forward
βœ”οΈ Strength train a couple times a week
βœ”οΈ Prioritize social connections
❌ Skip influencer routines
❌ Don’t add protein to everything

Sustainable beats dramatic. Choose habits you can keep, not just start.

Not all low back pain is the same and treatment comfort may depend on the individual. 🧠🦴

This randomized crossover trial compared standard vs. modified flexed lumbopelvic spinal manipulation in adults with LBP. While overall comfort scores showed no significant difference between techniques, individual preferences emerged. Some participants felt notably more comfortable with one position over the other. Findings highlight the importance of personalized care and exploring subgroups to optimize manipulation strategies.

A large Ontario study found that a previous concussion is linked to a significantly higher risk of serious motor vehicle crashes. Over 3 million adults were followed for up to 20 years, and those with a concussion had a 49% greater crash risk compared to patients with ankle sprains. The risk was highest in the weeks after injury and increased with repeat concussions. These findings suggest extra caution and clear safety guidance after concussion. πŸš—πŸ§

A new systematic review shows that breathing interventions may play a meaningful role in managing spinal pain. Across 20 studies, techniques like slow deep breathing, breathing awareness, and respiratory resistive breathing helped reduce pain and disability when added to usual care. Slow deep breathing showed the strongest benefits, while resistive breathing reduced pain when used alone. Tailoring breathing strategies to each patient may enhance outcomes in spinal pain treatment. πŸŒ¬οΈπŸ’™

A recent randomized controlled trial examined whether adding a nighttime orthosis improves outcomes after a cortisone injection for trigger finger. Results showed no added benefit- injections alone were just as effective as combined treatment. Overall, 68.9% of patients improved with conservative care.

Trigger finger grades reflect severity:
β€’ Grade 1: pain and mild catching
β€’ Grade 2: catching that can be released actively
β€’ Grade 3: catching that requires the other hand to release

Grades 1–2 had ~75% success, while grade 3 had a higher chance of needing surgery.

Grip strength is one of the strongest indicators of overall health, mobility, and longevity. Research shows that stronger grip is linked to better muscle strength, bone density, heart health, and even cognitive function. As we age, tracking grip strength can reveal early signs of muscle loss and help protect independence. Simple exercises like wrist curls, putty squeezes, and farmer’s carries can make a big impact. Strong hands = a stronger, healthier you. πŸ’ͺπŸ–οΈ
