Mississauga March-Making Myeloma Matter

Mississauga March-Making Myeloma Matter It’s not uncommon for people to confuse “myeloma” with “melanoma.” Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow.

You have probably heard the terms “multiple myeloma” and “myeloma”. These terms refer to the same thing: a cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells are found in the bone marrow, the hollow area within the bones. Because plasma cells are found in the blood, myeloma is referred to as a hematologic or blood cancer. It may also be referred to as plasma cell myeloma. The word “multiple” is often used because the malignant cells usually affect multiple areas of the bone marrow.

It is with great sadness that we
announce the passing of my Dad, Lurren Spencer at the age of 87.
He was living with Multiple Myeloma Cancer since 2009, and after a courageous fight, he passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Thursday, May 13th, 2021.

The Mississauga Myeloma March was headed by myself in 2012, after attending my first event in Windsor. I wanted to do my part in supporting my Dad on his Myeloma journey.

I can not express enough how grateful I am to all those that helped over the years to make the Mississauga Myeloma March a success. All of our volunteers, sponsors and participants and lastly, Myeloma Canada; We couldn't have done it without you.

Lurren is survived by his amazing wife and rock of 60 years Neslyn Spencer. He was the father of 10 children, 1 predeceased and had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends who loved him dearly.

is a life long sentence. Some days are easier to live with it than others.

Much hope lies in ongoing research, but the sobering fact remains. remains an incurable blood cancer of the immune fighting plasma cells.

Raising awareness is a key first step. Please take this step today, you can start by simply sharing our post. It will help educate those who have never heard of it.

Did you know?

~ Multiple Myeloma is the second MOST common Hematologic Malignancy (BLOOD CANCER) in the WORLD, YET continues to be under recognized due to the continued LACK of awareness of this unrelenting and relapsing cancer. This often leads to a delay in diagnosis. The general public often confuses the pronunciation of with "melanoma" which is skin cancer.

~ Multiple Myeloma Begins in the Bone Marrow, Where Blood Cells are Made.

Bone marrow is the soft blood-forming tissue that fills the cavities of bones and contains fat and immature and mature blood cells, including white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Diseases, such as Myeloma, or drugs that impact the bone marrow can negatively affect the total counts of these cells. ~ MultipleMyeloma is the blood cancer which keeps right on taking as it REMAINS INCURABLE for the majority.

How true is this statement? How many have we lost just this year alone? Some young, some not so young, some well known celebrities, some patients only known to their family and friends...this blood cancer does not discriminate, nor is it yet curable for more than just a small percentage.

~ Are the researchers making strides and committed? you bet they are, but it still is not enough, not in time for those who we have already lost. The facts remain sobering.

So please do your part fellow community patients and members, please share information about our cancer with others. Awareness is the first step to building a bridge to raise funds for critical research.

Please share to make and keep others aware.

Just another day at the office...

What Can I Say!?!

I've had a few messages asking how dad's journey is going with this war against multiple myeloma.
Happy to report that his monthly appointment with the oncologist went well, all numbers are still at the all Time Low, still on his daily maintenance treatment of revlimed and everything is looking good.

We are looking forward to getting the ball rolling with our annual multiple myeloma March happening in September at the Meadowvale Community Center.

Keep up the good flight my fellow warriors...remember
Never give up never give in!
