Statistics Canada () and the Canadian Institute for Health Information () have launched a collaborative process to identify what measures should be used to report on health and the health system – and then to share this information with Canadians from coast to coast.

This Health Indicators Framework includes 80 indicators measuring health status, non-medical determinants of health, health system performance and community and health system characteristics.

This includes: (self-rated health, , self-esteem, mastery), personal resources (social support, life stress), health behaviours (smoking rate, physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption), and health conditions (body mass index, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, chronic pain, and mood disorders).

How do we know what is good information, and what is not so good? As professionals, around is important, before considering for ourselves, and sharing with others.

Ten questions to ask:

1) Is this written by a qualified or registered health professional?
2) Does the author represent an established or reputable health organization?
3) Is the author free of commercial interests?
4) Does the article include multiple pieces of evidence to back up its claims?
5) Is enough information provided for you to check the background research for yourself?
6) Was the background research based on people similar to yourself?
7) Was the background research based on many people?
8) Are statistics clearly explained?
9) Is this information consistent with health information you have read from other reputable sources?
10) Is a review provided so that you can tell the information is up-to-date?

The more ticks/yes, the more reliable and valid your health information is likely to be.
