⛳ Golfer's Elbow?!🏌

👉 You might remember that we recently discussed Tennis Elbow (Lateral epicondylitis). Golfer's Elbow (Medial epicondylitis) is very similar!

😬 Common symptoms associated with Golfer's Elbow include pain in the inner Elbow that may extend into the forearm, stiffness in the Elbow joint, and weakness or numbness that may extend into the fingers.

💪There are many preventative measures you can take to prevent Golfer's Elbow, including:

🏋️‍♀️ Strenthenging the forearm muscles with light weightlifting

🧘 Prioritizing warm-ups and stretching

🏌‍♀️Ensuring you use the proper equipment for the specific task, sport, or job

👫 Working with a professional to fix your form and ensure that you are properly performing movements in the safest way for you

🛌 Taking frequent rest from repetitive tasks which cause strain to the elbow
😰 If the pain doesn't subside following use of ice, over-the-counter pain medications and rest, it's time to see a rehab professional!
🙌 Our team of physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists and personal trainers can help you get rid of your Golfer's Elbow and get back on the green! ⛳

🍁 In the province of Ontario treatment is covered no matter how minor you think your accident was. ➡️ We bill the insurer directly so that you are never out of pocket.
💥🚗 Being in a car accident can be psychologically and physiologically stressful. 😥
🤕 Physiologically speaking, the most common injury associated with a car accident is ’whiplash’. Essentially, when a car is being impacted from behind, the seat exerts a force on the back of the driver/passenger while the head remains at rest, causing a ‘whiplash’ on your neck, spraining ligaments and straining your muscles.
🦵Other injuries will most likely occur e.g., the knee joint being forcefully impacted into the dashboard, or the driver’s wrists being hyperextended from being rear-ended. 🖐
🧠 Lastly, concussions or brain injuries are also very common as a result of car accidents. Negatively affecting cognitive every day skills, disturbing sleep schedules, and balance skills.
❤️ Our experienced practitioners at St. Catharines PhysioHeal approach MVA patients with the right protocols, tailoring individual treatment to restore pre-accident ROM and musculoskeletal strength.

🔥😬 Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a compression of nerves between the collarbone and the first rib (thoracic outlet), it often mimics symptoms of carpal tunnel with pain, numbness and tingling down the arm into the hand and fingers. The cause of TOS is typically tight muscles and is often worse in the morning due to sleeping curled up on your side!

🥇 Physical therapy is the most effective treatment for TOS- the length of treatment can vary from person to person but generally people begin to see results in four to six weeks, although it could take up to four to six months depending on severity.

👉🙂 Your physiotherapist will recommend home exercises to provide relief at home between appointments & to accelerate the healing time. Scalene stretches, pec stretches, thoracic mobility, 1st rib mobility, nerve mobility, postural training, and scapular stability are often important aspects of rehab for this condition. 📞 905-890-4747

⚡😧 Do you have pain originating from your glutes and radiating down your leg⁉️ You might have sciatica❗️
🤔What does this refer to?
The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the body and is made up of 5 nerve roots: 2 from the lower spine and 3 from the sacrum.
On each side of your body, one sciatic nerve runs through your hips, glutes and down a leg, ending just below the knee, which then branches into other nerves all the way down to your foot. 🦶
There are different causes of sciatica such as: disk herniation, nerve impingement, and muscular imbalances.
👀 What are some of the symptoms?
People experiencing sciatica may feel a sharp or shooting pain down the leg, numbness or weakness in lower back, and ‘pins and needles’ in legs, toes, or feet.
How do we test it? 🔎
We use the Straight Leg Raise (SLR) Test and the SLUMP Test.
If you or anyone that you know have Sciatica, get in touch now! Our healthcare practitioners will get you back to 💯%

🔫☝️Trigger Finger is a condition where inflammation of the tendon sheaths surrounding the tendons of the hand cause impaired movement of the tendons, causing a lack movement of the fingers that are affected

👉First off, people notice a painless clicking during movement of the affected finger, but this can progress to painful catching or popping as symptoms progress.

In some cases the finger may become "locked" in a bent position.

🤔The exact cause of trigger finger isn't always certain, but some potential contributing factors include any activity requiring prolonged forceful finger flexion/bending (i.e. carrying shopping bags or a briefcase, prolonged writing, rock climbing, or the strenuous grasping of small tools)

This condition is more likely to develop in people in their 40s and 50s, 6 times more likely to develop in women, and 4 times more likely to develop in people with diabetes

Conditions causing connective tissue changes such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout are also associated with trigger finger!

💪🤕 Biceps Tendonitis ➡️ 905-890-4747 📞
The biceps tendon connects the biceps muscle to two bones in the shoulder, and one bone in the elbow.

👇 Causes of Biceps Tendonitis:
🔹️ Repetitive motions from certain sports or work activities, especially if these motions cause the elbow to repeatedly bend, or with repetitive hyperextension of the elbow.
🔹️A sudden increase in the intensity or amount of a particular activity that causes strain in the biceps tendon.
🔹️ A direct injury, like a fall in which you land on the shoulder or elbow.

👀 Who Is at Risk?
🔸️Sports that involve overhead arm movements such as: football, gymnastics, swimming, rock climbing, or lifting weights.
🔸️Exercise but rarely take time to warm up the muscles and tendons before beginning strenuous activities.

😁How to Prevent:
🔴 Always take time to warm up and stretch before beginning physical activities.
🔴 Allow yourself plenty of time to recover between different activities.
🔴 Commit to a regular workout schedule to build strength and flexibility.
🔴 Avoid repetitive motions that cause increased pain.

🦶Plantar Fasciitis👣 📞 905.890.4747

❓Dealing with heel pain? You might be suffering from plantar fasciitis, which involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue running across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes.

Your plantar fascia is in the shape of a bowstring, supporting the arch of your foot and absorbing shock when you walk. If tension and stress on this bowstring significantly increase, small tears can occur in the fascia.

🤔What are the main causes?
Flat feet or high arches, tight calves (which will shorten your achilles), obesity, high-heeled shoes, and standing for long periods of time.

👉At Heartland Wellness Clinic we have the proper tools (e.g., schockwave, manual therapy) to make your plantar fasciitis go away!

🛠 Improving Ankle Dorsiflexion 🦶

👉 Let’s start with introducing what ankle mobility is - ankle mobility refers to the amount of motion that is available at the ankle joints. One of the joints that has the most impact on ankle dorsiflexion and plantar flexion is the talocrural joint.

🔍 If your ankle dorsiflexion is limited due to previous injuries or surgeries, this can cause issues up the kinetic chain. Or be responsible for plantar fasciitis and increasing the risk of ACL tears.

❗️ If you also like getting under the barbell, limited ankle dorsiflexion will significantly decrease your squat depth. 😢

👍 Some of the exercises that may help with talocrural joint mobility and improve your dorsiflexion are:

1️⃣ Figure 8 Banded Distraction
- place a band around the ankle in a figure 8, this will pull the ankle joint downwards. At the same time, you want to loop around a band in a way that you can help dorsiflex your foot.

2️⃣ Knee Over Toe Split Squat
- adopt a lunge position with one foot placed on the slant board. Perform 2x6-10 lunges gradually driving your knee over your toes.

3️⃣ Foot elevated banded distraction
- with your foot on an elevated surface, placed a band right on your talocrural joint. This band should be providing a posterior displacement while you’re actively forcing your knee past your toes.)

🙂 Limited dorsiflexion can also be addressed by doing STR (soft tissue release), and mobs by practitioners.
