Imagine each person as a navigator steering a boat (biology) on a unique river (life circumstances), with their navigation skills (agency, resilience) guided by an internal compass (mind, thoughts, beliefs). The compass shapes how they interpret and respond to the river’s challenges (storms = stress, anxiety ) and their boat’s condition ( engine = neurotransmitters). If the compass is miscalibrated and is constantly pointing toward negative thoughts ( “I’m worthless,” “I’ll fail”) , then the navigator may veer off course, even in calm waters, without realising it.
Over time, these negative bearings become ingrained (core beliefs), making it second nature to steer toward self-defeating paths. The navigator’s external journey (behavior, outcomes) reflects this internal compass all the time.
