Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital of West Toronto

Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital of West Toronto We specialize in the treatment of complex surgical and emergent conditions of companion animals.

With over twenty years experience in the field Dr. Saundra Hewitt (DVM, DVSc, DACVS) brings a balance of experience and expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of your pet. If you’re viewing this page you are likely a pet owner whose animal requires complicated surgical treatment or a veterinarian researching referral options for your highly valued client. Surgery is a complex endeavor and due diligence is required before selecting the surgical referral option that is the best fit for you and your animal. If you are an owner, Dr. Hewitt and her staff realize that such a surgery is a significant event for you and your pet, both emotionally and financially. If you are a referring veterinarian we understand that you require excellence in both surgical care and prompt and thorough communication. In either case it is the mission of this practice to provide you with all the information you require to make an informed decision, to give your pet the best and most compassionate care available and to keep you informed of your patient’s progress.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed and the holiday season is in full swing, our homes are filling up with festive food, décor, and excitement — but also a few hidden hazards for our furry family members.

At Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital of West Toronto, we often see an increase in foreign body ingestion cases around this time of year. From leftover turkey bones to shiny tinsel, curious companions can be quick to swallow something they shouldn’t — and the consequences can be serious.

Myth: Anesthesia is too risky for senior pets.
Fact: With modern techniques and close monitoring, anesthesia can be performed safely in older patients. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork, customized protocols, and vigilant monitoring all reduce risk and improve outcomes.

Delaying needed surgery due to age can sometimes create greater risks than anesthesia itself. Our team is here to ensure every patient receives safe, individualized care.

Not every health concern requires an immediate trip to the ER—but some situations do. Bring your companion to the emergency hospital right away if you notice:

🔸Difficulty breathing or collapsing
🔸Seizures or sudden weakness
🔸Persistent vomiting or bloating
🔸Major trauma (car accident, fall, bite wound)

For less urgent concerns, your primary care veterinarian is the best first step. Knowing when to act can make all the difference.

Today, we take a moment to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the history and ongoing impact of residential schools, and to recognize the resilience of Indigenous communities across Canada.

While we remain open 24/7 for animal emergencies, we encourage our community to also take time for learning, listening, and supporting reconciliation efforts.
