Today marks the beginning of Black History Month—a time to recognize, honour, and celebrate the leadership, creativity, and brilliance of Black communities. This year is especially significant as Canada celebrates 30 years since Black History Month was first nationally recognized, a milestone highlighted in this year's theme: “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” As we reflect on the legacy and impact of Black Canadians—from historic nation builders to today’s emerging leaders—we also recommit to creating spaces where Black excellence, Black joy, and Black futures can flourish.

On National Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia, we remember the six worshippers whose lives were taken in the 2017 Québec City mosque attack — an act of hate that deeply affected Muslim communities across Canada. As a social justice union, we recognize that Islamophobia is not only an attack on individuals but a threat to equity, safety, and human rights. Islamophobia continues to manifest through rising hate crimes, harmful stereotypes, and discriminatory structures that impact Muslim workers. We stand in solidarity. challenge systemic racism and encourage action that confronts hate in all its forms.

On Int'l Holocaust Remembrance Day we honour Jewish lives stolen in the Holocaust and the communities forever changed. Remembrance calls us to confront antisemitism, guide us toward action, allyship, and a future where antisemitism has no place in our schools, communities, or world.

Family Literacy Day reminds us that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it grows at home, in libraries, and in our communities. When families read together, talk together, and learn together, children build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. Public education makes this possible by providing inclusive schools, skilled educators, and equitable access to resources for every child. Strong public schools help families thrive, strengthen communities, and open doors for the future.

On International Day of Education, we recognize the power of public education to protect human rights and expand opportunities for every learner. Public education is a commitment to dignity, safety, and belonging for all. When it is well‑resourced and defended, it becomes one of our strongest tools for equity, inclusion, and social justice. Public education matters — and it’s worth defending.
