A RETINAL DETACHMENT is when an area of the retina lifts away from the back of the eye.

Who is at risk:
* nearsighted individuals
* history of an eye injury or eye surgery
* retinal tear or detachment already in other eye

Early signs of a detached retina:
* sudden onset of flashing lights
* sudden onset of new floaters - cobwebs, lines, specks
* shadow appearing in peripheral vision
* gray curtain covering part of your field of vision

A detached retina needs to be examined immediately as permanent vision loss is very possible. Call your optometrist or head to Urgent Care at St. Joes Hospital - London.
