Rachelle’s Upper Blepharoplasty POV 👀

Q: “Why did you choose to have a blepharoplasty?

A: I chose to have a blepharoplasty as it was the best alternative to address the concerns that I had. I also have many patients who have had this procedure done by Dr Howley and I saw first hand how rejuvenating and beautifying it was for a low risk and minor procedure. The excess skin that covered my eyelids made me look tired and started to project an appearance of sadness as they tilted downward no matter what I did and how rested I was. The skin in the eye area is so delicate and ages at the fastest rate even with all preventative measures. Genetics also had a part in the anatomy of my eyes. I knew that nothing else other than surgery at this point would help as I had done everything on my end. Botox wasn’t able to lift my lids anymore and makeup on my lids wasn’t possible anymore.

Q: “How was your recovery?”

A: The recovery was relatively easy. No pain at all. I took the post care instructions seriously, and even did extra. The swelling, bruising and blurred vision was the worst part for the first few days and repetitive icing. It didn’t stop be from running errands in public, family gatherings or going back to work. I’m open about what I do and love sharing to whoever wants to hear!

Q: “What would you tell someone considering a blepharoplasty?”

A: I absolutely recommend this procedure to anyone that is bothered by excessive eye lid skin. It’s a relatively quick procedure, painless, easy recovery, low risk, with little to no scaring (hidden in the crease of the eyelid). It’s a HUGE impact and return on the investment that will take years off your face without altering your appearance. You are left looking rejuvenated, rested but still looking like yourself! Oh and eyelid makeup is possible again!

What to expect Day 6 post blepharoplasty?

On day 6 after blepharoplasty, most patients are starting to look and feel noticeably better. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Swelling & Bruising

• Swelling continues to decrease, though some puffiness (especially in the morning) is still normal.

• Bruising may be yellow, green, or fading out—usually much lighter by now.

• One side may still appear more swollen or bruised than the other (common and temporary).

2. Incision Healing

• Incisions may look pink or slightly raised but are continuing to heal well.

• Rachelle’s sutures will come out on day 7

• You might notice a bit of itchiness, which is a good sign of healing.

3. Vision & Eye Comfort

• Dryness, tearing, or light sensitivity may persist but should be improving.

4. Activity

• You’re still avoiding heavy lifting, bending, and strenuous workouts.

• Gentle walking and light daily activity are fine.

• Still protect your eyes from sun exposure and wind (sunglasses help).

5. Looking Ahead

• Some patients begin to feel comfortable returning to low-key social activities with sunglasses or light makeup.

• At your follow-up visit, we will start discussing skincare, makeup, and exercise.

What to expect Day 5 post blepharoplasty?

On Day 5 after blepharoplasty, you’re entering the phase where healing starts to become more visible. Here’s what you can typically expect:

1. Swelling & Bruising

•Swelling should now be noticeably improved, but still present—especially in the morning.

• Bruising is often fading in color, possibly turning green, yellow, or light brown.

2. Incisions

• The incision lines may look a bit pink or slightly scabbed, which is normal.

• You might start to feel itchiness—a good sign of healing.

3. Vision & Eye Sensation

• Dryness, tearing, or light sensitivity may persist but should start improving.

• Some patients feel a tight or “pulled” sensation near the corners of the eyes.

4. Activity

• Light activity like walking is fine.
• Still avoid exercise, bending over, heavy lifting, or anything that raises pressure in the face/eyes.

5. Appearance

• You may still not feel “public-ready” without sunglasses or makeup, but most patients see real improvement by this point. (Fun fact: Rachelle has been running errands already).

What to except Day 4 post blepharoplasty

On day 4 after blepharoplasty, you’re typically in the middle of the early healing phase. Here’s what you can generally expect:

1. Swelling & Bruising

• Still noticeable, but should be starting to decrease, especially if you’ve been using cold compresses as advised.

• Bruising may start to shift in color—from purple/red to green/yellow as it resolves.

2. Discomfort

• You may still feel some tightness, soreness, or mild irritation, but pain should be minimal by this point.

• Most patients only need Tylenol or nothing at all for discomfort now.

3. Vision

•Can still be a bit blurry, especially if there’s residual swelling or ointment being applied.

• Dry eyes or tearing may occur, and light sensitivity is common.

4. Incisions

• If sutures are still in place, they may start to feel a little itchy.

• There may be a bit of scabbing or crusting along the incision line.

• Keep incisions clean. No makeup.

5. Activity

• Still avoiding strenuous activity, bending, or heavy lifting.

• Walking around is fine and encouraged, but avoid anything that increases blood pressure to the face.

6. Follow-up

• We plan your suture removal around day 7-9.

Day 3 After Upper Eyelid Surgery: What to Expect

• Swelling and bruising may still be visible but often begin to level off today.

• Itching or tingling around the incisions can start—this is a good sign of healing!

• Bruising might start to change color as it resolves.

• Pain is typically minimal by now.

• Rest and head elevation still matter.

Healing can look messy before it looks amazing—trust the process!

• Swelling & Bruising: Often more pronounced than Day 1—this is normal. Bruising may spread under the eyes or into the cheeks.

• Tightness or Puffiness: A continued sensation of fullness or tightness in the eyelids is common.

• Discomfort: Still mild and usually well-managed with pain meds.

• Watery Eyes or Light Sensitivity: May persist. Sunglasses can help with comfort.

• Cold Compresses & Elevation: Still helpful to reduce swelling.

• Limited Activity: Patients should continue resting with minimal physical exertion.

What to expect Day 1 after upper eyelid blepharoplasty:

• Swelling & Bruising: This is completely normal and usually peaks in the first 48 hours

• Tightness or Pressure: Mild discomfort or a feeling of heaviness around the eyes is common

• Watery or Blurry Vision: Temporary, often due to swelling or ointments

• Cold Compresses: Use intermittently to reduce swelling—10–15 minutes at a time

• Rest & Elevation: Keep your head elevated and avoid bending, lifting, or strenuous activity

Every recovery is a little different.
Healing takes time—but the results are worth it.

Thank you to Rachelle for sharing her recovery journey!
