Well done Dr. Daniel and PMC Energy Performance!
Great story!
RenO2blu - Medical Grade Filtration Leveled Up With Maritime Ingenuity
- Medical spaces just weren’t ready for COVID-19 -
March 2020, as information on the COVID-19 virus started to trickle into the scientific literature, it became evident to Dr. Nach Daniel that controlling the air quality in his dental and oral surgery clinics would be crucial in ensuring both the safety of patients and staff alike. Quickly, the world learned that the coronavirus can spread via aerosol or droplets, cause great angst, and potentially infect staff and patients. Both health Canada and the CDA have stated that aerosol transmission is an important factor in virus spread and had advised ways to minimize to combat virus spread.
Most dental and medical offices weren’t ready, typically, these offices are not equipped with medical-grade air purification systems but instead rely on conventional commercial-grade ventilation systems. These systems do not eliminate viral particles and in most cases serve as a vehicle to spread the virus in the entire clinic through the duct system.
- We had to do something about it -
At this stage of the pandemic, Dr. Daniel decided to connect with Mike Dixson, co-owner of PMC Energy Performance and together they decided to develop a medical-grade air purifying system that can solve the dangers of aerosols in medical and dental settings. Mr. Dixson quickly mobilized his team and started working on the first prototype with two objectives in mind.
Design a medical-grade air purifying machine which could eliminate bacteria, virus, mould and other airborne particles in the air.
Develop a suction system that can be incorporated into a dental light that would capture the aerosol generated during a dental procedure.
Our vision became a reality three months later as we introduced RenO2blu to the market.
- Put it to the Test -
The team started testing the new unit in order to determine its efficacy. Several experiments were designed and completed in Dr. Daniel's oral surgery office.
“Our results showed a significant reduction in aerosol particles when the suction system was used. Over 90% of aerosol particles generated during the experiment were directly eliminated at the source by the Surgihood technology without spread into the dental room.”
These encouraging results pushed us to further validate the efficacy of our air purifying unit, not only for suctioning the viral particles but most importantly in trapping and destroying these particles.
At this stage, the team started working with Maritime Geothermal, a local manufacturing company, on the final design and outsourcing of the RenO2blu air purifying unit while Moncton-based, Apex industries, worked on the design and build of the companion Surgihood.
- Moving to Market and Standard Setting Results -
The RenO2blu air purifying machine hit the market in October of 2020. Several dental clinics and retirement homes have since purchased the device in order to protect their patients with interest from commercial offices and hospitals also in the mix.
The efficacy of RenO2blu was also verified by an independent specialized FDA-approved aerosol laboratory in the United States where the RenO2blu was tested with a live virus in order to assess its efficacy. The RenO2blu achieved stellar results when it was able to eliminate 99.9% of viral particles in less than 15 minutes putting the unit well above its original goals.
Based on these and real-world results our early adopters are seeing, the RenO2blu will play an important role in the global fight against COVID-19 as well as other similar viruses such as influenza.
- What’s Next? -
The team is working hard to introduce the Reno2blu units in various markets including Seniors homes, Dental offices, Gyms, Corporate offices, Hospitals, Pharmacies, etc. Our next phase is creating an awareness campaign to the business community to show that this technology is readily available.
Work on the final prototype of the attachment Surgihood technology is almost complete and should be ready for final testing in March of 2021. We believe that this medical suction device complements well with the RenO2blu and will become the standard in the dental and medical industries.
The device will be mainly used in clinical situations where there are high levels of aerosols which could cause significant risk to both patients and staff. The Surgihood device, which has been patented, should be available on the market in the second quarter of 2021.
