Eric (Left) and Micah (Right) have been going by the clinic to ensure that construction continues on schedule. Although we will formally introduce ourselves in the coming weeks, we feel as though it is important for you to get to know us.

Micah will be Action Sport Physio Bois-Francs Head Athletic Therapist.
Eric will be Action Sport Physio Bois-Franc's Head Physiotherapist.

Both Eric and Micah strive to create individualized treatment plans for their clients that hinge on a combination of manual therapy and exercise. They believe in involving the client in the rehabilitation process and that treating the person is always superior to treating simply the injury.

Hello beautiful people!

Over the next couple of months WattsTherapy will be undergoing some pretty major changes all with the end goal of offering better service to you. Although some of you may already know about some of the upgrades that are in store... I believe that a bit of suspense is warranted for this kind of announcement 😉

As WattsTherapy evolves into it's next form, I would like to thank each and every one of you. From those who first trusted me as I launched my practice out of my basement, to all those that have joined me and supported me along the way. None of this would be event remotely possible without you!

Stay tuned for more announcements over the next few months, and I look forward to continuing to work with you for all of your Athletic Therapy needs! 😁

In this instalment of my never ending quest to have my clients better understand their injuries and to demystify medical-ese... muscle strains. It is likely that all of us have pulled a muscle at some point. The most common being hamstrings and back muscles.

A muscle strain or a pulled muscle often happens form a rapid overstretching of your muscle. If your muscle is not able to control the lengthening it becomes susceptible to tearing.

Strains come in three grades ranging from a mild ~5% tear up to a much more severe, complete 100% tear. Through our assessment we will be able to make an inference towards how damaged the muscle is and build our rehabilitation plan around it. In some cases, when more complete tears are suspected alternative interventions like imaging (MRI etc...) or surgery may be needed.

So like always... what can be done? Well first things first we need to assess. From there we will want to reinforce the musculature and help stimulate healing. We will avoid stretching the area since pulling more on a pulled muscle will likely just make things worse. Instead we will work on regaining you active range of motion, improving your strength and most importantly making sure that you avoid developing any compensations.

TFSA, RRSP, Mutual Funds, ETFs, GICs... don't worry I won't offer you any financial advice, but I will say this, it is difficult to enjoy the spoils of your monetary investments if your health is not cooperating.

May I suggest that investing in your health has by far the best rate of return of any investment that one can make. Whether it be by improving your diet, getting more sleep, being consistent at the gym or taking care of your aches and pains, maintaining your health will allow you to do more of the things that you enjoy for longer.

If you need some help getting started, don't be afraid to ask for some help from your health care professionals, we are more than happy to help!

With spring around the corner, many of you may be starting to think about lacing up your running shoes and starting to run. Although running is a sport that I highly encourage, I want to ensure that you will be successful and pain free.

Running is a sport. Every single time that your foot hits the ground you are absorbing 1.5-3x your body weight all while balancing on one leg. To ensure that you are running safely, you should complement your running with a strength program.

Don't rush. I typically recommend that most people start running under the LISS model (Low Intensity Steady State). This is in contrast to the ever popular HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Running is as much a physical game as a mental one, take your time, keep your legs moving and enjoy the process.

Finally, be consistent. Being consistent is made difficult if you rush out of the gate and fatigue yourself or if you injure yourself by not doing any strength training (so keep points 1 and 2 in mind 😉). Set yourself an attainable goal and ensure that you win.

Finally, exercise should be fun, not something that you dread. If at the end of the day running isn't for you, there are many other options out there to keep you active. As always if you are unsure how how to approach training reach out to a professional... we are always happy to help!

Unfortunately, low back pain is very common. Occasionally however, the pain and discomfort does not stop there. Commonly referred to as Sciatica, an irritation of the sciatic nerve can lead to pain, burning, tingling or numbness down the leg.

It is important to note that although irritated, the sciatic nerve itself is rarely the main problem. Instead, our assessment will seek out the dysfunction that is leading to the irritation in the first place. Poor posture and mechanics for example may have led to a disc herniation which in turn is now irritating the sciatic. Each case is different making out assessment critical.

Once we have identified the culprit or culprits we can get to work at fixing them. Initially manual therapy such as soft tissue release and joint mobilization can help to restore the potential for proper biomechanics. From there, exercise will be our best friend. We will need to reinforce proper movement patterns in order to prevent the issue from coming back!

Recovery from injury is an active process. Unfortunately, as much as I wish I could offer you a magic solution that could "cure" you overnight, this simply is not the case. Sustained results take effort, commitment and perseverance.

In my case, this typically comes in the form of your home exercise prescription. Although you can expect hands on manual therapy treatments with me in the clinic, there are 23 other hours in that day that I am not following you around which means that it is my job to help you become your own therapists.

As an Athletic Therapist, my goal is to be your guide to recovery, to help craft a comprehensive rehabilitation plan and to get you back to feeling 110%. However the onus does not fall entirely on me. As my patient, it is your job to make it happen!

If you are ready to take control of your injuries and to get yourself back to feeling like yourself, I would be more than happy to help with the process 💪

I think it goes without saying that exercise is important... but often times we allow life to get in the way and suddenly it feels like there is no time left. If that is you, then it may be beneficial to note that any exercise is better than no exercise and that may be a good place to start.

Simply being conscious throughout the day can allow you sneak exercise into your life without even needing to sign up for the gym. Simple things like taking the stairs can really add up. Depending on what your commute and office set-up looks like this simple modification may add quite a few steps to your day.

If stairs aren't your thing, or your office is on the main floor then consider parking further from the entrance. Not only are you less likely to get your door dinged, but you are adding quite a few steps forcing you to stretch your legs.

Finally, activities such as watching TV need not be static and can serve as a nice distraction. Next time you are watching your favourite Netflix show, try doing a few pushups, squats or planks. Every minute counts!

We all want to get better, that goes without saying, however when things don't go according to plan it is very easy to get discouraged. What I encourage all of my clients to do is to take one step back and take a look at the big picture.

Bad days can be expected, but if you are able to take a step back and look how far you have come your outlook on the situation may change.

Even if you feel as though you have taken a step back, don't forget how many steps forward you have taken.
