Once considered radical, Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole’s method of intuitive eating has become the cornerstone of the modern anti-diet movement.

I was initially introduced to this mind frame switch when learning how to provide trauma-informed care, however, I think it’s great for everyone to apply.

Instead of assuming someone has mal-intent, is crazy or just plain bad, take a moment to consider their trauma. The way people act and treat you is more often a reflection of their attitudes and the trauma that they carry.

Also, don’t forget to extend the same compassion to yourself🤗 If/when you act out, reflect on why you acted that way rather than judging yourself.

Ex: someone struggling with an eating disorder gives into one of their compulsions. Instead of beginning the cycle of blame and self-hatred, they remind themselves that their compulsions once were an effective way of regulating their emotions and keeping them safe. They are just practicing what they know and challenging that is difficult.

A few weeks ago I met with a client and asked her how she felt about her body. She said she hates it because it’s a representation of her biggest failure in life.

My heart aches for her. We don’t choose our body weight and shape; they cannot be manipulated in the long term. No one deserves to be led to believe that their body is a reflection of their worth. This is the devastating culmination of widespread fatphobia. If this isn’t a reason to fight, I don’t know what is💗👊🏼

I’m currently reading a very well esteemed book within the eating disorder community and I’m taken aback by the overwhelming amount of weight stigma.

Essentially, the author is insinuating that all people with “obesity” overeat; he suggests that they can experience periods of dietary restraint but that overall, they’re intaking a sufficient amount of calories for their bodies to function properly. I know first handedly that this is not true. In fact, this can be super damaging and invalidating to those in larger bodies suffering from anorexia.

It is possible to chronically undereat and remain in a fat body. Read that again.

If you live in a larger body and over-evaluate your weight and shape and base your self-worth on your ability to control the two, I see you. Your experience with anorexia is just as valid as any other and you are just as deserving of help. There are many weight-inclusive healthcare professionals waiting to start your recovery journey with you💗

A very wise person once said that we need to stop “should-ing” all over the place.

If we’re thinking that we should do something, it means that we’re experiencing some sort of internal conflict; we’re torn between expectation and what we truly desire in the moment.

If we do what we “should” (ex: order a salad instead of the fried shrimp tacos), we’re left feeling unsatisfied and unhappy. And, if we don’t do what we believe we “should” (ex: ordering the fried shrimp tacos), we feel guilt and shame. Should-ing makes for a lose/lose situation.

The solution? Catch yourself when you’re should-ing and reframe it with an “I will _____ because _____” statement. For example, instead of thinking “I should order a salad because it’s more nutritious than fried shrimp tacos”, think “I will order fried shrimp tacos because that’s what I want right now and honouring my cravings is crucial for developing a healthy relationship with food.” 🍤🌮😋

To suggest that it’s okay for thin people in recovery to binge in response to restriction, but not for fat people, is fatphobic.

Challenging your anti-fat bias can be difficult, I get it. It’s not easy to shake deeply ingrained beliefs. If, however, you find yourself getting defensive, acknowledge that and get curious as to why🤔
